The Tale of Two Systems: A Call to Help Dr. Aemiro Yiheyes

Netherlands: Yesterday was one of my young daughter’s football training days. At the end of the game, she called to tell us there had been an accident—a bird (a pigeon) had fallen from a tree. She informed us that they had called the animal ambulance, and she would be late.

Within half an hour, an ambulance arrived from a nearby town to attend to the injured pigeon. Before taking the bird, the emergency team gave the young girls a short demonstration on how to rescue animals and handed out booklets about animal care.

I found myself reflecting on this—how much care and effort goes into saving even a pigeon in this country, but also how resources are allocated and taxes are spent. Paying nearly 59% of my income in taxes and VAT, I now understand how such services are funded. It was a moment that highlighted the societal priorities here: valuing all lives, even those of animals.

Ethiopia: This week, a colleague back home in Ethiopia, an OBGYN working at a tertiary hospital, was diagnosed with end-stage liver disease and requires a transplant.

Like many physicians in the country, he does not have health insurance. To make matters worse, he does not even have the privilege of receiving adequate medical care in the hospital where he has worked tirelessly. The transplant service is unavailable in Ethiopia, and he has been referred abroad for treatment.

With a monthly salary of 160 Euros, affording the 40,000 Euros needed for the procedure is impossible. He reached out for help, but the health system he served for over two decades and the university he worked at for the last seven years remained indifferent to his plight. More than 200 colleagues and friends contributed what they could, but even collectively, we could not raise 10% of the required amount.

This starkly highlights a paradox of humanity and the extreme disparity between two systems. In one system, resources are dedicated to caring for cats and pigeons; in the other, a public servant who has helped save the lives of countless mothers is abandoned to die from a treatable disease. It is a sobering contrast that forces reflection on the value systems underpinning these realities.

I know contributing to one person will not solve our deep-rooted systemic issues, but at least it is what we are capable of doing at this time. Let us rally to support Dr. Aemiro Yiheyes in his time of need. Together, even a small act of kindness can make a difference in saving his life.
