Dunning-Kruger Effect Vs Imposter syndrome

There are two intriguing cognitive biases that seem to be increasingly prevalent these days.

They are called “The Modern Dilemma:
Confidence ≠ Competence, and the Dunning-Kruger Effect Vs Imposter syndrome.

Nowadays, a fascinating trend is on the rise - the Dunning-Kruger Effect. It’s a cognitive bias where confidence often overshadows actual competence. Many out there confidently venture into explaining various subjects, often without a solid grasp of the topic, while genuine experts quietly grapple with Imposter Syndrome, doubting their remarkable abilities.

Educating our society about this cognitive bias is paramount. It’s crucial to understand that being confident isn’t always synonymous with being competent. What’s truly astonishing is how individuals with the Dunning-Kruger Effect seem to dominate the landscape of social media. They’re the voices shaping discussions on politics, health, spirituality, and more, and what’s even more remarkable is the acceptance they receive. I’m sure some people come to your mind while reading this. Yes I’m talking about them.

This phenomenon raises a critical question: Isn’t it fascinating how society welcomes those with the Dunning-Kruger Effect as influencers and thought leaders one way or another?

For those victims of Imposter Syndrome with true talents among us, often making u doubt ur own capabilities. Remember, you’ve earned your place! Embrace your Competence.

Let’s create awareness and advocate for a culture that values true expertise, emphasizing the significant difference between confidence and competence. Together, we can foster a society where genuine knowledge and wisdom shine through. 💪✨.

As an OBGYN Resident, I envision a future where, instead of relying on ACOG, RCOG, or Parkland Hospital, we will have our own ECOG (ESOG's), updated annually with links to our own lecture videos for each topic.

This concept wouldn’t be limited to ECOG alone; it would extend to the Ethiopian Society of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, & all other specialties .

Becoming a specialist or subspecialist shouldn't mean bringing an overwhelming amount of foreign resources that only cause confusion among students. Instead, it should involve adapting the materials you study to local research & creating our own books & videos. This is how we should evaluate specialists & subspecialists—by their ability to contribute to this cause.
