Hear the latest Indonesia's VC and startup ecosystem luminaries.
The value and volume of venture investments in privately-held companies in Greater China continued to move in opposite directions in the third quarter of 2022.
Startups headquartered in Greater China raised $15.1 billion in July-September 2022, which is a slump of 34.7% from the same period last year.
In contrast, deal volume hit a fresh record of 690 venture deals, according to our latest report.
As risk-averse investors shied away from making big bets on near-IPO companies, there was a surge in small-ticket deals in the early stages at the expense of late-stage fundings. There were 400 transactions at Series A and earlier funding stages that accounted for 58% of the Q3 deal count. This pattern is expected to continue in Q4 as well.
The report also dwells upon the public market. Adverse factors at home and abroad continued to hinder the plans of IPO hopefuls in Greater China.
The period between Q1 and Q3 2022 saw 325 Greater China companies go public — down 33.9% from the same period last year. In total, they raised about $63.6 billion, a decrease of 26% YoY, according to the report.

Ability to show return on investment, DPI, leveraging technology, and talent hiring will power Asia’s growth story through 2022
In September 2022, DealStreetAsia in partnership with Ontra launched the private equity (PE) landscape report– a white paper that analyses the fundraising activity in the first nine months of 2022 across Asia. The report served to initiate a panel discussion…
Southeast Asia-based startups raised $3.72 billion in venture capital funding in the third quarter, down 22% from Q2 and 36.4% year on year, on the back of a paucity of big-ticket, late-stage deals.
Deal count, on the other hand, increased 11% quarter-on-quarter to 277 during the period as early-stage investments continued to drive volume.
According to DealStreetAsia’s latest report, the quarter saw an uptick in debt financing as startups sought to stave off flat or down rounds. Venture-backed startups inked at least 15 debt financing deals in Q3, raising $819 million in total.
In the first nine months of this year, startups raised $12.68 billion in equity funding, down 16.4% year on year, and another $1.54 billion in debt financing.

Hit by global macroeconomic headwinds, Indian startups could raise only a little over $3 billion in the quarter ended September, down almost 58% sequentially. On a year-on-year basis, the fall was even more stark — deal value in the quarter under review was down 83% from Q3 2021, while deal count was down 34%.
According to our latest report, growth stage funding in India is in severe distress. Consider this: the volume of megadeals, or deals worth at least $100 million, fell to five in Q3, compared with 21 in the previous quarter and 43 in the year-ago quarter.
The fall in the number of megadeals is a sign that investors are writing smaller cheques in the early stages, at the expense of late-stage deals.
With only one quarter left in the year, startup fundraising is short of 2021's total ($46 billion) by around $23 billion. Deal volume, however, has held up. Consequently, 2022 is likely to go down as a paradoxical year, when fundraising fell despite more deals being sealed by India’s startups.
