SafePal Breach Exposes 39,798 Buyers as Stolen Records Hit Cybercrime Forum

SafePal disclosed on Aug. 16 that an authorization flaw in an order-tracking plug-in exposed the personal data of 39,798 customers, with a threat actor already advertising the records for sale on a cybercrime forum.

• The flaw affected orders placed between March 2, 2025, and April 11, 2026, leaking names, email addresses, shipping addresses, phone numbers and purchase details.

• Seed phrases, private keys, wallet passwords, bank account information and payment card numbers were not compromised, and there is no evidence of wallet or fund access.

• The file pairs home addresses and phone numbers with proof of hardware wallet ownership, making it a targeting list for phishing and physical robbery.

• SafePal emailed affected customers on Aug. 16, took down over 30 fraudulent websites and phishing links, cut personal data retention to 90 days, and is engaging an independent security firm to validate the fix.

• It is the second hardware wallet customer database exposed in three days — Trezor disclosed on Aug. 13 that a breach at fulfillment partner ShipMonk exposed data for 13,689 customers.

Stripe’s Reported $7 Billion OpenRouter Deal Buys Micropayments Without a Blockchain

Stripe has finalized an agreement to buy AI model gateway OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, Bloomberg reported Sunday, citing people familiar with the matter.

• OpenRouter meters AI usage against prepaid deposits and charges 5% on crypto top-ups against 5.5% on card purchases made through Stripe.
• Stripe co-incubated Tempo to settle machine payments onchain; the chain is running at about one transaction per second.
• Tempo recorded 80,388 transactions over 24 hours, with $38.79 million TVL and $53.12 million stablecoin supply; Morpho Blue is the largest protocol with $30.38 million locked.
• OpenRouter's homepage listed 200 trillion monthly tokens, 10 million users, more than 80 providers and more than 500 models.

Fake World Assets Opens Gacha Pool to New NFT Collections via FWAir

TokenWorks is letting artists launch new NFT collections directly into Fake World Assets' randomized pool through a mechanism called FWAir, extending the protocol from trading existing NFTs to issuing new ones.

• Under FWAir, an approved creator sets a price for each NFT and supporters back individual pieces with ETH; if every NFT is backed within the period, the collection launches into FWA and both NFTs and backing ETH enter the pool, otherwise backers are refunded.

• Creators are paid from acquisition fees their NFTs generate inside the pool rather than from backer ETH — no money at mint, with expected payout roughly the mint price multiplied by collection size.

• FWA generated $11,069 in fees over the past 24 hours, down from a peak of $1.63 million on July 25; fees over seven days totaled $424,168 against $10.25 million over 30 days.

• Total value locked stands at $3.14 million, down from $5 million on Aug. 4; the first FWAir launch is expected this week.

• FWA traded at $0.0296 on Monday, up 19% over 24 hours and 24% over seven days, with a market cap of about $29 million.

Compound Foundation Hires Coinbase, Anchorage Alumni To Run $52M Institutional Push

The DAO-approved two-year budget aims to turn the 2018 lending protocol into credit infrastructure for banks and asset managers.

• Four executives recruited from Coinbase Custody, Anchorage Digital, the NEAR Foundation and Maple Finance will deploy the funds; Aaron Schnarch, ex-COO of Anchorage and ex-CEO of Coinbase Custody, takes the helm as Executive Director.

• Proposal 582 executed May 10 with 1.88 million COMP in favor and none against; the $52 million splits into $28 million for operations and $24 million for growth, with only $14 million going to the Foundation's own multisig.

• The remaining $38 million sits in a Program Reserve controlled by a 5-of-7 Treasury Management Committee multisig, released against milestones including a production V3 integration kit, tier-one curator onboarding and a public V4 testnet.

• Compound V2 and V3 hold about $1.23 billion in deposits, versus $14.8 billion at Aave and $8.06 billion at Morpho Blue; the Foundation pitches zero bad debt since launch, a record that held through November 2025 when withdrawals were paused in three stablecoin markets on Gauntlet's recommendation.

• The V4 roadmap includes tokenized equities as collateral, permissioned vaults with KYC/AML controls and a third-party risk manager; the first institutional product ships within weeks.

• COMP traded near $16.26, about 98% below its May 2021 high of $854.45; delegates have pressed for spend data the Foundation has not yet published.

South Korea Blocks Polymarket Over Gambling Concerns

South Korea has become the latest country to restrict access to Polymarket, joining more than 30 jurisdictions in cracking down on the prediction market.

• South Korea's Media and Communications Standards Commission voted Tuesday to block domestic access to Polymarket, concluding its prediction markets facilitate illegal gambling.

• Polymarket argued it removed Korean-language services, does not accept Korean won, and uses non-custodial smart contracts rather than holding customer funds directly.

• Regulators rejected that defense, citing Polymarket's role in creating markets, setting trading rules, providing settlement infrastructure, and collecting fees.

• The decision follows a review that began in July at the request of Korean police and gambling authorities; police have reportedly opened investigations into local Polymarket users.

TCRs Will Rise Again

Bankless argues token curated registries are crypto's most underrated primitive and deserve a second look in 2026.

• TCRs were a mechanism many creators and teams experimented with in their initial wave, though they remain the most obscure of the acronym-driven eras like ICOs, DAOs and NFTs.
• Author William M. Peaster previously worked at JPG, which used TCRs to build a curatorial layer for NFTs.
• The thesis: almost everything in crypto that failed the first time will eventually work sometime in the future, citing Bitcoin's repeated near-failures as precedent.
• Peaster expects the same pattern for NFTs, creator tokens, DAOs, gaming, TCRs, onchain reputation, rebase tokens and decentralized experiments.

Public Citizen: Trump-Linked Crypto Investors $4.7B Underwater

A new Public Citizen analysis estimates investors in Trump-linked crypto products are sitting on at least $4.7B in losses, even as Trump himself reported making at least $1.4B from crypto last year.

• Losses break down to $3.2B from TRUMP, at least $1B from WLFI, $450M from Trump Media's Bitcoin treasury and $9.3M from Trump NFTs; USD1 holders saw essentially no losses thanks to the dollar peg.

• Nansen data shows roughly 1M of 1.6M retail wallets trading TRUMP on Solana DEXs were underwater by a combined $3.2B; WLFI losses include a ~$1.04B paper loss on AI Financial's treasury plus at least $54M lost by retail DEX buyers.

• Much of the $4.7B remains unrealized — only ~$400M of the TRUMP estimate was realized, while the top 1% of winning wallets captured ~$2.7B, framing the damage as wealth transferred from later buyers to early ones.

• Trump reported $635M in TRUMP licensing fees and $527M attributable to him from WLFI token sales in 2025; Public Citizen found no apparent evidence he invested his own capital in either project.

The Sandbox Pledges 1:1 SAND Repayment After Bridge Exploit

The Sandbox will repay eligible holders of bridged SAND on Base and BNB Chain 1:1 in Ethereum-based SAND after an Aug. 22 exploit drained 14,742,341.84 SAND from its Ethereum vault, per an Aug. 27 post-mortem.

• The plan covers legitimately bridged balances from a pre-incident snapshot, not tokens created through the unauthorized mint; funding comes from the treasury with no new SAND minted, leaving the fixed 3 billion maximum supply unchanged.

• Two centralized exchanges hold over 72% of eligible balances and will distribute replacement tokens directly; other holders use a claims portal expected to open within two weeks and stay open for two weeks.

• A configuration flaw let the attacker register as sole verifier of incoming bridge messages, minting unbacked SAND on both networks; the 14.74M SAND taken was ~0.5% of max supply, far above the initial estimate of under 0.01%.

• SAND on Ethereum and Polygon was unaffected; unbacked tokens are isolated and cannot be bridged or redeemed, bridging on affected networks stays disabled, and the compromised contracts will be permanently retired.

Stellar RWA Assets Outgrow Its DeFi Markets

Tokenized real-world assets on Stellar passed $3 billion in July while the network's DeFi markets held a fraction of that, according to a RedStone report published Wednesday.

• RedStone puts Stellar's RWA supply at about $785 million in January and more than $3 billion in July, against DeFi total value locked of $213 million.

• Lending protocol Blend held $127 million, of which just over $2 million sat in pools accepting RWAs as collateral; DefiLlama showed Stellar at $232.72 million TVL on Friday, with Blend at $150.03 million.

• Most growth came from four products: the Amundi and Spiko Overnight Swap Fund at $713 million, Spiko's T-Bill fund at $536 million, Ondo's USDY at more than $533 million and VuMe Bond 2030 at $500 million.

• RedStone ties the gap to pricing — treasuries, credit funds and money market shares settle on schedules that do not match a lending market liquidating collateral around the clock, and 24/7 feeds are what turn those assets into usable collateral. Stellar now carries 55 SEP-40 price feeds from RedStone spanning Treasuries, corporate credit, tokenized gold and money market funds.

• RedStone also points to DTCC's plan to bring DTC-custodied assets to Stellar in 2027; DTCC's assets under custody sit at $114 trillion. XLM traded at $0.1835 on Friday, down 0.9% over 24 hours, with a market cap of $6.36 billion.
