⚠️ Details of the Binance hack have become known — hackers likely gained access to the transaction signing system via the exchange's DevOps engineer's laptop, which allowed them to penetrate a service container and initiate fund withdrawals without stealing private keys.

To attack one of the hot Ethereum wallets, the attackers used the EIP-7702 mechanism from the Pectra update — they pre-prepared 50 signed authorizations with sequential numbers, one of which triggered and transferred control of the wallet to a malicious smart contract.

In just three minutes, the contract withdrew 167,464 ETH, 1.615 billion USDT, and more than 60 other tokens.

Simultaneously, hackers were draining Binance wallets in nine other blockchains using regular transactions with valid signatures — TRM Labs analysts believe that the attackers gained the ability to use Binance's signing system for multiple networks at once, but the exact method of infrastructure compromise is still being investigated.
