Andoni Iraola says signing another winger remains Liverpool’s priority in the transfer market.

Speaking at a press conference in Chicago at the start of the club’s pre-season tour of the US, Iraola was asked many new players he ideally wanted on board for the challenges ahead.

“It is difficult to say a number when the market is open,” he said. “You have to be always open to new options to improve the squad. There are obvious situations where we know we need to sign players. Winger, for example. We definitely need to sign a winger.”

William Saliba is set to avoid surgery after sustaining an injury on World Cup duty with France.

The 25-year-old defender was substituted after half an hour of France’s 2-0 World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, having started in all bar one match at the tournament.

Arsenal have now confirmed that the centre-back will not have surgery but will have a period on the sidelines.

With William Saliba out for an extended period, Arsenal are looking to strengthen in the centre-back department.

Pep Guardiola has declined the opportunity to take the Italy national team head coach role.

The Italian Football Federation’s (FICG) technical director Paolo Maldini and the head of the federation Giovanni Malago confirmed this week that the FICG had held talks with Guardiola over the possibility of succeeding Gennaro Gattuso, who left the position in April after Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup.
