Conditionals (Zero, First, Second, Third)

Conditionals are sentences that describe real or unreal situations and their results.

They usually have two parts:

If-clause (condition)

Main clause (result)

0. Zero Conditional

Used for facts and general truths.

Structure:
If + present simple, present simple

Examples:
If you heat water, it boils.
If people eat too much, they gain weight.
If it rains, the ground gets wet.

1. First Conditional

Used for real and possible future situations.

Structure:
If + present simple, will + base verb

Examples:
If it rains, I will stay home.
If you study, you will pass.
If he comes, I will talk to him.

2. Second Conditional

Used for unreal or imaginary present/future situations.

Structure:
If + past simple, would + base verb

Examples:
If I had money, I would travel.
If she studied harder, she would pass.
If I were you, I would wait.

3. Third Conditional

Used for unreal past situations (regret).

Structure:
If + past perfect, would have + past participle

Examples:
If I had studied, I would have passed.
If she had left earlier, she would have caught the bus.
If they had invited me, I would have gone.

Quick Memory:

0 = always true

1 = real future

2 = imaginary present/future

3 = imaginary past

Common Mistakes:

If it will rain, I will stay home
If it rains, I will stay home

If I would have money, I would travel
If I had money, I would travel

If I studied, I would have passed
If I had studied, I would have passed
