1- Hit the books – study hard Example: I need to hit the books before the exam.

2- Learn by heart – memorize something completely Example: She learned the poem by heart.

3- Pass with flying colors – pass very successfully Example: He passed the test with flying colors.

4- Burn the midnight oil – study or work late at night Example: We burned the midnight oil to finish the project.

5- Teacher's pet – the teacher's favorite student Example: Everyone thinks Sarah is the teacher's pet.

6- Bookworm – a person who loves reading Example: My sister is a real bookworm.

7- School of hard knocks – learning through difficult life experiences Example: He learned business in the school of hard knocks.

8- Learn the ropes – learn how to do a job or activity Example: It took me a week to learn the ropes.

9- Put on your thinking cap – think carefully Example: Put on your thinking cap and solve this problem.

10- Read between the lines – understand the hidden meaning Example: If you read between the lines, you'll know what she really means.

Conditionals (Zero, First, Second, Third)

Conditionals are sentences that describe real or unreal situations and their results.

They usually have two parts:

If-clause (condition)

Main clause (result)

0. Zero Conditional

Used for facts and general truths.

Structure:
If + present simple, present simple

Examples:
If you heat water, it boils.
If people eat too much, they gain weight.
If it rains, the ground gets wet.

1. First Conditional

Used for real and possible future situations.

Structure:
If + present simple, will + base verb

Examples:
If it rains, I will stay home.
If you study, you will pass.
If he comes, I will talk to him.

2. Second Conditional

Used for unreal or imaginary present/future situations.

Structure:
If + past simple, would + base verb

Examples:
If I had money, I would travel.
If she studied harder, she would pass.
If I were you, I would wait.

3. Third Conditional

Used for unreal past situations (regret).

Structure:
If + past perfect, would have + past participle

Examples:
If I had studied, I would have passed.
If she had left earlier, she would have caught the bus.
If they had invited me, I would have gone.

Quick Memory:

0 = always true

1 = real future

2 = imaginary present/future

3 = imaginary past

Common Mistakes:
