Past Perfect Progressive Tense (Past Perfect Continuous)
1- What is Past Perfect Progressive?
The past perfect progressive tense is used to talk about an activity that started in the past and continued up to a specific time in the past.
2- Structure / Form
Affirmative Positive
Subject + had been + verb ing
Examples
I had been studying.
She had been working all day.
They had been playing football.
Negative
Subject + had not been + verb ing
Examples
I had not been studying.
He had not been working.
Interrogative Questions
Had + subject + been + verb ing?
Examples
Had you been studying?
Had she been working?
3- Uses
a) Activity and duration before a past time
Action started before and continued until that past moment
Examples
I had been studying for three hours before the exam.
She had been living there for years before she moved.
b) Cause of a past result
Shows why something happened
Examples
He was tired because he had been working all night.
Her eyes were red because she had been crying.
c) Repeated actions before a past time
Examples
She had been calling him all day before he answered.
They had been trying to fix the problem.
