What Makes PhD Students Happy?

(Answer: Having a Good Supervisor)

An article published in Nature on October 23, 2025, explored what contributes most to PhD students’ satisfaction. A survey of 3,700 doctoral students from various countries revealed that having a supportive supervisor and maintaining a positive relationship with them are the strongest predictors of happiness during the PhD journey.

Half of the respondents reported that their supervisors spent less than one hour per week meeting with them. In contrast, in Brazil and Australia, about 82–83% of students expressed satisfaction with their supervision.
