ב-23 באוקטובר 1983, בסביבות השעה 06:22 שעון ביירות, משאית תופת נכנסה ישירות לתוך הצריפים של הגדוד הראשון של גדוד הנחתים השמיני בביירות, לבנון, והתפוצצה. עוצמת הפיצוץ גרמה להרס והתמוטטות הבניין בן ארבע הקומות, וריסק למוות 241 חיילים אמריקאים, רובם חיילי נחתים אמריקאים. הנחתים היו חלק מכוח שמירת שלום רב-לאומי שנועד לפקח על הנסיגה השקטה של ​​ארגון השחרור הפלסטיני מלבנון.

43 years ago, #Hezbollah🌟 terrorists attacked the US Marine Corps base in Beirut, Lebanon, killing 241 Americans. We will never forget their sacrifice.

On October 23, 1983, at around 06:22 Beirut time, a stake-bed truck carrying explosives drove directly into the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines barracks in Beirut, Lebanon and exploded. The force of the explosion collapsed the four-story building into rubble, crushing to death 241 American servicemen, majority of them being U.S. Marines. The Marines were part of a Multi-National Peacekeeping Force meant to oversee the peaceful withdrawal of the Palestine Liberation Organization from Lebanon. (U.S. Marine Corps Video by LCpl.
