במהלך מבצע מודיעיני ופעולה ממוקדת, בהובלת גדוד "עציון" ובשיתוף פעולה הדוק עם השב"כ, לוחמי יחידת "הגדעונים 33" מיחידת "להב 433" עצרו השבוע, ביום שני, מחבל בבית לחם.

הפעילות המודיעינית והתפעולית התמקדה בתושב מקומי בן 48, פעיל בארגון הטרור "ג'יהאד אסלאמי פלסטיני", שעבד בחייו האזרחיים כנהג מונית. על פי גורמי הביטחון, לאחרונה הוא עסק באופן פעיל בשיקום תשתיות הארגון באזור, השתתף בפעילות הקשורה לפעולות חוצות גבולות, וכן העביר כספים למימון טרור.

המבצע בוצע ביום בהיר. על המונית של החשוד בוצעה מעקב מדויק על ידי כוחות מודיעין ויחידות קרקעיות. בהתאם להוראה, כאשר הרכב הגיע ליעדו, לוחמים, בסיוע צוות טקטי, הקיפו את החשוד ועצרו אותו. תוך שניות ספורות הוא הועבר לרכב של כוחות הביטחון.

During an intelligence operation and a targeted raid led by the Etzion Battalion, in close cooperation with the Shin Bet, officers from the Gideonim Unit 33 of Lahav 433 arrested a terrorist in Bethlehem on Monday.
The intelligence and operational activity focused on a 48-year-old local resident, an operative in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist organization who worked as a taxi driver in civilian life. According to security officials, he had recently been actively involved in rebuilding the organization’s infrastructure in the area, participated in activities related to cross-border operations, and transferred funds for financing terrorism.
The operation was carried out in broad daylight. Intelligence personnel and ground forces closely tracked the suspect’s taxi. When the vehicle reached its destination, the officers, assisted by a tactical team, surrounded the suspect and arrested him. Within seconds, he was transferred to a security forces vehicle.

לצד זאת, נטען כי "לא ברור עד כמה יוכלו המאמצים הדיפלומטיים להתיר את הסבך הקשה ולמנוע הצתה של מלחמה חדשה". לפי הדיווח, מתנהלים בטהראן דיונים סוערים על כניסתה של מוסקווה לתמונה ועל מאמציה להפחתת המתיחות, במיוחד לאחר ביקור לברוב בטהראן.

באיראן רווחת ההערכה כי רוסיה שואפת לקרב בין עמדות הצדדים באמצעות הצעת יוזמות פשרה, על רקע חזרתה של סוגיית הגרעין למוקד המחלוקות במשא ומתן, ובהמשך למגעיה האחרונים עם ארצות הברית ועם מדינות המפרץ.

מנגד, נראה שטהראן לא תסכים לשום הצעה הנוגעת לסוגיית הגרעין או לפתיחת מצר הורמוז, גם אם תגיע ממוסקווה, כל עוד לא יינתן מענה לחששותיה המרכזיים באמצעות הפסקת התקיפות המתמשכות והסרת הלחצים הכלכליים.
