ב-11 באוגוסט, היא יצאה לפגישה עם גבר.

המשטרה החלה לאסוף ראיות והגיעה לחשוד, גבר בן 32 עם עבר פלילי, שכלל שימוש בסמים, אלימות ורישום קודם של אלימות כלפי בת זוג.

לחשוד היה צמיד אלקטרוני, שמטרתו הייתה להגן על בת זוגו לשעבר. הנתונים מהצמיד הזה עזרו לחוקרים לקבוע את מיקומו.
מצלמות אבטחה תיעדו אותו כשהוא קונה דלק בתחנת דלק. לאחר מכן, גופתה של סוני נמצאה שרופה בכרם.

On August 11, she went out to meet a man.
The following day, she did not return home.
A farmer passing through vineyards in southern France found her body, naked and burned, among the vines.
Police began gathering evidence and identified a suspect — a 32-year-old man with a criminal record that included drug use, violence, and a previous record of violence against a partner.
The suspect was wearing an electronic monitoring bracelet intended to protect his former partner. Data from the bracelet helped investigators determine his location.
Surveillance cameras recorded him purchasing fuel at a gas station. Sonia's body was later found burned in the vineyard.
He was arrested on suspicion of premeditated murder.
French media and authorities did everything they could to conceal his name and identity, but angry internet users launched their own investigation in an effort to spread information about the suspect's identity.
