בכיר סורי ששוחח עם סוכנות הידיעות 'רויטרס':

השלטונות בסוריה איתרו שרידים מתוכנית הנשק הכימי הסודית של משטר אסד המודח, לראשונה מאז נפילת המשטר, כך לפי מוחמד קתוב, הנציג הסורי בארגון לפיקוח על איסור הנשק הכימי של האו"ם (OPCW) אמר כי אותרו בין השאר חומרי גלם ותחמושת שהייתה דומה לזו ששימשה את משטר אסד לביצוע של המתקפות הכימיות הקטלניות במהלך מלחמת האזרחים. עוד מסר קתוב כי 18 חשודים במעורבות בתוכנית הזו נעצרו על ידי השלטונות החדשים במדינה, כולל בכירים צבאיים, שלטוניים ומומחים טכנולוגיים.

במהלך מלחמת האזרחים העקובה מדם, משטר אסד ביצע כמה מתקפות באמצעות נשק כימי באזורים שנשלטו על ידי המורדים, כמו למשל זו שבוצעה ב-2013 באל-ר'וטה, אחד מפרברי דמשק, ב-2017 בעיירה ח'אן שייח'ון שבמרכז המדינה, וב-2018 בעיירה דומא שבפרברי דמשק. משטר אסד מעולם לא הודה בשימוש בנשק כימי במהלך המלחמה, וב-2013 טען כי פירק את תשתיות הייצור ואת מאגרי הנשק הקיימים. מתקפות כימיות שבוצעו לאחר מכן הוכיחו כי מדובר היה בטענות כזב. ב-2019 ארה"ב, בריטניה וצרפת אף ביצעו מתקפה משולבת כנגד מתקני ייצור של נשק כימי.

בזמנו, כתבתי כאן ב 26 למרץ 2025, על הודעת ההתנגדות העממית הסורית (המתנגדים למשטר החדש) שהחזיקה בנשק כימי.
כאן על תקיפה ישראלית באזור כלא סידנאייה הידוע לשמצה, אשר בעקבות התקיפה היו דיווחים על חומר כימי מתפשט באזור דמשק.

גם ובאפריל 2025 כאן, על הודעת הארגון למניעת הפצת נשק כימי:

לפי הערכות ישנם יותר מ-100 אתרי נשק כימי ברחבי סוריה.
חלק מהאתרים בסוריה מימי משטר אסד עשויים להיות מוסתרים במערות או באתרים אחרים שקשה לאתר את מיקומם.
מאגרים בסוריה עשויים לכלול גז סארין בנוסף לגזי כלור וחרדל.

A senior Syrian official speaking to Reuters:

The Syrian authorities have located remnants of the secret chemical weapons program of the ousted Assad regime for the first time since the regime's collapse. According to Mohammad Katoub, Syria’s representative to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, authorities discovered raw materials and munitions similar to those used by the Assad regime in carrying out deadly chemical attacks during the civil war. Katoub also stated that 18 suspects involved in the program have been arrested by the country's new authorities, including senior military officials, government figures, and technical experts.

During the bloody Syrian civil war, the Assad regime carried out several chemical attacks against areas controlled by rebel forces, including the 2013 attack in Eastern Ghouta, the 2017 attack in Khan Shaykhun, and the 2018 attack in Douma. The Assad regime never admitted to using chemical weapons during the war and in 2013 claimed it had dismantled its production infrastructure and existing stockpiles. Later chemical attacks proved these claims to be false. In 2019, the United States, Britain, and France carried out a joint strike against chemical weapons production facilities.

At the time, I wrote here (March 26, 2025) about a statement by the Syrian Popular Resistance (opponents of the new regime) claiming possession of chemical weapons.

I also wrote here about an Israeli strike near the notorious Sednaya prison area, after which there were reports of a chemical substance spreading in the Damascus area.

Additionally, in April 2025, I wrote about a statement from the OPCW:

According to assessments, there may be more than 100 chemical weapons sites across Syria. Some sites dating back to the Assad era may be hidden in caves or other locations that are difficult to identify. Syrian stockpiles may include sarin gas, in addition to chlorine and mustard agents.
