🎙 HASSETT: "EXTENDED WAR WON'T HURT THE U.S. ECONOMY"

Hassett on extended war risks once said: “If the war were to be extended, it wouldn’t really disrupt the U.S. economy very much at all. It would hurt consumers… but that’s really the last of our concerns right now.”
The CB Weekly Market Recap (March 29th - April 4th, 2026) ⚡️

🔴 The five-week losing streak of the U.S. stock markets is finally over.

🔴 The S&P 500 posted its first weekly gain since the war began, rising 3.4% on the week while the Dow added ~3% and the Nasdaq surged 4.4%. It’s also worth noting this trading week was shorter than usual with markets being closed on April 3rd for Good Friday.

🔴 The week's standout trading session was Tuesday – all three indices posted their best day since May 2025. The rally was brought about by reports of a possible diplomatic resolution to the ongoing Iran war.

🔴 Specifically, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump told aides he was willing to end U.S. military operations in Iran even if the Strait of Hormuz remained closed. Shortly after, an unconfirmed report said Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was open to ending the war with security guarantees.

🔴 This momentum was further bolstered by the release of two economic data points on Wednesday. Retail sales came in better than expected for February at +0.6% (vs. +0.5% estimate), showing consumers held up ahead of the Iran war. ADP payrolls also showed that 62,000 private sector jobs were added in March, which is well above the consensus estimate of 39,000 jobs.

🔴 Though, it’s important to note that much of this optimism has since been tempered. Trump has since intensified his rhetoric against Iran, threatening to hit Iran "extremely hard over the next two to three weeks" if no deal is reached. Specifically, he threatened to target the country's infrastructure including bridges and power plants, while Iran reportedly struck additional sites in Arab Gulf states.

🔴 These developments have seen the price of oil remain elevated. By Thursday, WTI had spiked to $111.29, settling above the $100 price level for the first time since July 2022. It has also overtaken the global Brent benchmark in price – a rare market inversion that comes as the market bets on prolonged U.S. military engagement.

🔴 That said, there are signs that negotiations between Iran and other countries may be progressing smoothly. Notably, by the end of the week, we saw multiple ships linked to Japan, France and Oman passing through the Strait of Hormuz for the first time since the Iran war shut it down. We also saw a total of 13 ships cross the Strait since Friday morning, with 10 exiting the Persian Gulf and 3 entering. This is the highest weekly flow since the war began.

🔴 As for crypto, BTC remains stuck trading range-bound between $65K and $70K. Among major altcoins, Solana took a relatively big hit this week as news of Drift Protocol’s $200M+ hack created uncertainty and fear of possible contagion effects on other protocols on the chain.

🔴 Looking ahead, investors are waiting for the markets to react on Monday to the economic data releases that came out on Good Friday - the NFP jobs report and the unemployment rate. Notably, Friday's jobs report shows the economy added 178,000 jobs in March, nearly three times the market forecast of 59,000. Unemployment also ticked down to 4.3%, though largely from a shrinking labour force. That said, Monday (April 6th) is also the day of Trump's deadline for Iran to agree to terms or face strikes on its power grid.

🔴 Beyond that, we have the PCE inflation data (due Thursday) and the CPI release (due Friday) to look forward to. Notably, the CPI release this coming Friday will be the first print capturing the full impact of the oil shock on consumer prices. A hotter-than-expected CPI wo...
