🚨 Eighteen Companies and Individuals Charged with International Fraud

The first criminal charges for market manipulation and "wash trading" in the cryptocurrency industry have been filed against financial services companies, particularly market makers. This action is part of the FBI's Operation Token Mirrors, which targeted unethical token developers, promoters, and market makers in the crypto space. The investigation, involving law enforcement and intelligence agencies from the US and EU, resulted in the seizure of over $25 million in cryptocurrency and the deactivation of trading bots responsible for executing millions in fraudulent trades.

The allegations suggest that these crypto companies engaged in deceptive practices by making false claims about their tokens and executing scam trades to manipulate prices. This misleading behavior attracted new investors, driving up token prices before selling them at inflated values. Acting US Attorney Joshua Levy emphasized that such fraudulent activities, likening them to traditional pump-and-dump schemes, would be met with aggressive legal action. Notably, Alexey Andryunin, a well-known market maker associated with the Humster Kombat project, was arrested in Portugal on October 8 as part of the crackdown.
