5 IPL captains who left one team to lead another
Over the years, several prominent captains have made high-profile switches, leaving behind successful stints with one franchise to begin a new chapter elsewhere.

Captaincy changes are always among the biggest talking points in the Indian Premier League (IPL). While players switching franchises has become common over the years, seeing a captain leave one team and take charge of another often grabs even more attention.

Over the years, several prominent captains have made high-profile switches, leaving behind successful stints with one franchise to begin a new chapter elsewhere. Some managed to recreate their success, while others found it difficult to make the same impact in different environments.

Here are 5 IPL captains who left one franchise to lead another:

5. Adam Gilchrist

Adam Gilchrist. (Source: IPL)

The legendary player from Australia, Adam Gilchrist , was one of the pioneers of the Indian Premier League in the early years of the competition. The dashing left-hander led the Deccan Chargers to a championship victory in IPL 2009 as a captain. He led his side from the front that season, smashing 495 runs in 16 matches, with a strike rate of 152.30.

But, ahead of IPL 2011, Gilchrist was picked up by Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in the player auction and was naturally named as captain of the side as well. In the Punjab jersey, though, he could not replicate the same impact as a captain. His record at KXIP was poor, with just 12 wins in 34 matches as a captain. This switch remains one of the major switches in IPL history by a captain.

4. Sanju Samson

Sanju Samson (Photo source: RR)

The most successful Rajasthan Royals captain ever, Sanju Samson shocked everyone with his stunning trade ahead of IPL 2026 to Chennai Super Kings. The former RR captain led the franchise for five years, with 33 wins in just 67 matches as captain.

Under his captaincy, RR reached their first-ever IPL final since 2008 when they played the IPL 2022 final against the Gujarat Titans. But, after having a poor season in 2025 and struggling with injuries, Sanju Samson decided to part ways with the franchise and was involved in one of the biggest trades in IPL history, with Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran going to the Jaipur-based franchise.

Shreyas Iyer

IPL 2024 Champions. (Source - IPL/BCCI)

Shreyas Iyer remains one of the most successful IPL captains ever. He has led three different IPL teams, namely DC, KKR, and PBKS to an IPL final as a captain, and that speaks volumes of his credentials as a captain.

In IPL 2024, the three-time IPL winners KKR claimed their third IPL title under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership, and everyone expected that this would be the start of a long journey for both Iyer and KKR. But, to everyone’s surprise, Shreyas was released in the IPL 2025 auctions by KKR. He was then bought by PBKS for a record price of INR 26.75 crore. This remains one of the few instances where an IPL-winning skipper was released by a team ahead of the next season.

Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir. (Source - IPL/BCCI)

Gautam Gambhir enjoyed a stellar IPL career, both as a player and as a captain. The left-hander first captained an IPL side in IPL 2009 when he was named the captain of the Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals). He led them for one more year before switching to KKR in IPL 2011.

He was bought by KKR for a record price of $2.4 million in 2011, and that marked the start of his beautiful journey with the Kolkata-based franchise. He built a literal dynasty at KKR under his captaincy, winning the IPL title twice. But, ahead of the IPL 2018 auction, he decided to part ways with the franchise and returned back to Delhi as a captain. After a string of poor results, he stepped down as Delhi’s captain and eventually retired from IPL after the same season.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya (Source: JioStar)

The most high-profile IPL switch happened in 2024 when Gujarat Titans' championship-winning captain Hardik Pandya was traded to the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 edition. What made this even more surprising was that he replaced Rohit Sharma as Mumbai Indians’ captain. Hard
ik remains one of the most successful IPL captains ever, but his stint with MI has been far from successful.

In the three seasons under the star all-rounder's leadership, the five-time champions managed to reach the playoffs only once while finishing at the last position in 2024. They further had a ninth-spot finish in the most recent 2026 season, following which, talks of the Choryasi-born player being traded to other franchises have caught fire once again, with Rajasthan Royals and CSK being the frontrunners to bag him.

Royals of Rayalaseema (ROR) square off against Tungabhadra Warriors (TW) in match No. 19 of the ongoing Andhra Premier League (APL) 2026 at the YS Raja Reddy Stadium in Puttampalli.

Dhruva Kumar Reddy-led Royals have played four matches so far. They are languishing at No. 6 on the points table, only above the Tungabhadra Warriors. In four matches, the Royals have only won one and lost three. Meanwhile, the Warriors also have a similar win-loss record, but they are holding the wooden-spoon position due to their abysmal net run rate of -1.706, the worst in this season so far.

The Royals had met the Warriors earlier in the season. The latter won the closely contested encounter, chasing down a 149-run target off the last ball, with two wickets to spare.

YS Raja Reddy Stadium, Puttampalli: Pitch Report

YS Raja Reddy Stadium has been a happy hunting ground for the batters in the tournament so far. In the first five matches held at the venue this season, the average first-innings score has been 208. Teams batting first have scored 200-plus totals in four matches. Defending totals is very difficult at this venue and captains would want to win the toss and bowl first.

ROR vs TW: Probable Best Performers of the Match

Probable Best Batter: Garimella Teja

Garimella Teja has been in fine form this season. He has played four matches so far, and in three innings, he has scored 160 runs at an average of 80 and a strike rate of 145.50. The right-handed batter will have a key role to play in the middle-order.

Probable Best Bowler: Saurabh Kumar

Saurabh Kumar is going to be the bowler to watch out for on Sunday. The left-arm spinner is a wily customer who knows how to keep the batters in check and build pressure, even on surfaces which have very little help for him.

📢Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Ailsa Lister handed demerit point for breaching ICC Code of Conduct

Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Ailsa Lister handed demerit point for breaching ICC Code of Conduct (Source:Gettyimage)

Scotland batter Ailsa Lister has been officially reprimanded for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Scotland’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group B clash against the West Indies on June 18.

Lister was found guilty of violating Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground equipment, fixtures, or fittings during an international match. In addition to the reprimand, one demerit point has been added to her disciplinary record. It is Lister’s first offence within a 24-month period.

The incident took place in the 19th over of Scotland’s innings. After being dismissed, Lister expressed her frustration by throwing her bat and gloves onto the ground while leaving the field. She then kicked and knocked over a bin placed next to the team dugout.

Lister admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by GS Lakshmi of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees, eliminating the need for a formal hearing. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Claire Polosak and Kerrin Klaaste, along with third umpire N. Janani and fourth umpire Nimali Perera.

Under the ICC Code of Conduct, Level 1 offences carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and can result in a fine of up to 50 percent of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

Talking about the match, West Indies Women posted a competitive total of 153/6 after electing to bat first. Veteran batter Stafanie Taylor top-scored with an unbeaten 47, while Katherine Fraser was the pick of Scotland’s bowlers with figures of 2/34.

In reply, Scotland Women were bowled out for 146, falling seven runs short of the target. Darcey Carter led the chase with a fighting 59, while Lister contributed 33 runs. For the West Indies, Aaliyah Alleyne starred with figures of 3/11, while captain Hayley Matthews claimed 3/19 and Afy Fletcher chipped in with 2/16.

Scotland currently sit third in Group B with one win from two matches and are set to face England Women in Leeds on June 20.
'Let's not take a crystal ball and try to assess what he can become' - WV Raman on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

📢'Let's not take a crystal ball and try to assess what he can become' - WV Raman on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

WV Raman urged cricket enthusiasts around the world to be patient with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and to allow him time to learn from experience. The 15-year-old is still very new to domestic cricket and has just received his maiden call-up to the Indian team after stunning performances against legendary bowlers in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Sooryavanshi has been named in India's squads for the T20I series in Ireland and England and the subsequent Asian Games later this year. The southpaw is in line to become the youngest player to have made his debut for India. Sachin Tendulkar currently holds the record, having made his international debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Sooryavanshi is expected to break this record easily, as he just turned 15 in March.

While the cricket fraternity is excited to see what achievements Sooryavanshi can achieve in his career, Raman advised them not to put him under undue pressure by weighing him down with their expectations.

"Let's not take a crystal ball and try to assess what he can become. Things will pan out because he has done well in two back-to-back IPL seasons. He has shown he is not afraid of taking on the best in the business. Experience is obviously a tough teacher because it punishes you first and teaches you the lessons. So, along the way, he would be punished by experience, and then he'll be taught lovely lessons too. Age is on his side. Just allow him to play his cricket," WV Raman was quoted as saying by NDTV.

Sooryavanshi is currently in Sri Lanka, where he is playing for India A under Tilak Varma's leadership. However, the opening batter hasn't been at his best in testing conditions. He also got involved in a heated altercation with the Sri Lanka A players in the fourth match of the tournament, which was decided in the Super Over. Sooryavanshi pushed Vishen Halambage, who had reportedly been sledging him since the first meeting between India A and Sri Lanka A.

In four matches, Sooryavanshi has scored 117 runs at an average of 29.25 and a strike rate of 153.95. The teenager would want to finish the campaign on a high with a big score in the summit clash on Sunday, June 21.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi inadvertently cost his side five crucial runs during the third ODI against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai after repeatedly running on the protected area of the pitch.

The incident occurred during the 40th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Shahidi, who was batting brilliantly and went on to score his maiden ODI century, had already been warned multiple times by the on-field umpires for running in the danger area of the pitch. Despite the warnings, he once again ran through the protected zone while completing a single.

As a result, on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Rohan Pandit penalised Afghanistan under the Laws of Cricket. The single taken by Shahidi was disallowed, and five penalty runs were awarded to India. The decision proved costly for Afghanistan as they looked to post a competitive total against a strong Indian bowling attack.

According to Law 41.14 of the MCC Laws of Cricket, batters are prohibited from running on the protected area of the pitch, a 5-foot by 2-foot strip located in the centre of the wicket. The law is designed to prevent damage to the surface, which could unfairly affect the contest between bat and ball.

For a first offence, the batting side receives an official warning. Any subsequent infringement by either batter results in a five-run penalty being awarded to the fielding side. Additionally, any runs completed on that delivery are cancelled.

Despite the setback, Shahidi played a captain’s knock and remained the standout performer for Afghanistan. He scored a well-compiled 102, while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 50 runs. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 218 in 44.2 overs. India’s bowling attack was led by Prasidh Krishna, who delivered a match-winning spell of 5/23 in 8.2 overs.

The Men in Blue had already secured the three-match ODI series with victories in the first two games. Indian captain Shubman Gill played a pivotal role in those wins, scoring a half-century in the opening ODI before following it up with a commanding 150 in the second match to help India take an unassailable 2-0 lead.
