📢IND vs AFG 2nd ODI: What Is Shubman Gill carrying around his neck? Explained

IND vs AFG 2nd ODI: What Is Shubman Gill carrying around his neck? Explained (Photo Source: Jiostar)

India captain Shubman Gill has been in outstanding form during the ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan. After playing a match-winning knock in the opening game at Dharamsala, Gill continued to attract attention in the second ODI at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. However, apart from his batting, many fans noticed a white cloth wrapped around his neck while he was on the field.

The item Gill was wearing was not a fashion accessory or a medical support. It was an ice-soaked cooling towel, a common aid used by cricketers and officials during extremely hot weather conditions. With temperatures in Lucknow hovering around 40 degrees Celsius and very little wind available to provide relief, players have been dealing with intense heat throughout the match.

They are soaked in cold water or ice and then placed around the neck, an area where major blood vessels are close to the skin. The cooling effect helps lower body temperature and allows players to cope better with challenging weather conditions. Gill was seen using the towel while batting, and several other players as well as the umpires were also using similar cooling aids to combat the heat.

Gill’s performance in ODI cricket continues to be exceptional. The right-handed batter has established himself as one of the most reliable players in the format, scoring more than 3,100 runs in 63 ODIs at an average close to 59. His fearless approach and ability to dominate bowling attacks have made him a key figure in India’s batting lineup.

In the first ODI of the series, which was reduced to 25 overs due to weather interruptions, Afghanistan posted a competitive total thanks to a brilliant 102 from Rahmanullah Gurbaz off just 51 balls. India’s bowlers responded well, with Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey picking up three wickets each.

Chasing 195 for victory, India comfortably reached the target in 22.5 overs. Gill led the charge with an unbeaten 84 off 66 deliveries, striking 11 fours and two sixes. His innings guided India to a seven-wicket victory and a 1-0 lead in the series.
'The decision that has disappointed me is that one' - Mohit Sharma questions Team India's playing XI changes for 2nd ODI
Mohit Sharma slammed the Indian team management's decision to drop Harsh Dubey from the playing XI for the second ODI against Afghanistan despite his exemplary performance on debut in the first game.

📢'They are jealous, we have to prepare him' - Manoj Tiwary's massive claim on Vaibhav Sooryavanshi incident in IND A vs SL A tri-series match

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (Photo by Ashley Allen-ICC/ICC via Getty Images)

Manoj Tiwary stated that many countries are envious of India's success and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi in particular, because of his surreal rise at a young age. The former Bengal captain's remarks came while he was reacting to Sooryavanshi's scuffle with the Sri Lanka A players during the ongoing tri-series.

Sooryavanshi pushed Sri Lankan cricketer Vishen Halambage after India A lost the Super Over against Sri Lanka A in Dambulla on Monday, June 15. Halambage, who had been reportedly sledging Sooryavanshi from the start of the tri-series, has been sanctioned, but the Indian batter hasn't been penalised.

Tiwary said that Sooryavanshi has to decide how he wants people to perceive him. The former India cricketer said that the 15-year-old can either follow the footsteps of Sachin Tendulkar or Rahul Dravid and exude calmness, or else, he can embark on Virat Kohli's route and be aggressive.

"Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has to understand a little. There will always be verbal battles against us on the pitch, because there are many countries that are jealous of us. So, they will provoke you. The way Vaibhav Suryavanshi's IPL campaign went, and the way he is moving forward and getting everything, so they will poke him more. The way a 15-year-old is progressing, they are jealous of it. So, we have to prepare him for it," the former batter said on Cricbuzz.

"It is upto him what kind of image he wants to create in the cricketing world. One path is like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, who are generally calm people, they answer through performances. The other route is like Virat Kohli, people who are aggressive. Now he needs to decide how people want to perceive him. Anger is important, but it is important to point it in the right direction," he continued.

"He scored only 30-40 runs today, so it is affecting him" - Manoj Tiwary on Vaibhav Suryavanshi's form in tri-series in Sri Lanka

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was dismissed for 38 off 28 balls in India A's must-win clash against Afghanistan A on Wednesday. Tiwary said that the incident with Halambage is affecting the youngster's performance and urged him not to go outside the laws of the game.

"No one will take action against him for this, but he must realise what he has done. No one wants to see an emerging player be involved in pushing and shoving. The more he plays, the more he will understand about the conduct in the field. But under any circumstances, he should not go outside the laws of the game. People are watching him, and his behavior will be noted. He scored only 30-40 runs today, so it is affecting him, as he did not score as much he should have" Manoj Tiwary concluded.

'It will just create a headache for the future and nothing else' - Manoj Tiwary questions India's playing XI selection for 2nd ODI vs Afghanistan

📢'It will just create a headache for the future and nothing else' - Manoj Tiwary questions India's playing XI selection for 2nd ODI vs Afghanistan

Manoj Tiwary (Source: mannirocks14/IG)

Manoj Tiwary claimed that there is a lack of clarity within the Indian team management, particularly questioning the decision to open with Yashasvi Jaiswal alongside Rohit Sharma in the second ODI against Afghanistan at the BRSABV Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Wednesday, June 17.

With Nitish Kumar Reddy being ruled out of the clash with a sore left thigh, Yashasvi was brought into the side. He moved up to the top of the order, with captain Shubman Gill slotting in at No. 3.

Manoj Tiwary opined that if Shubman scores runs while batting at No. 3, it will be a headache for the team management, as they would be wondering whether to move the right-handed batter back to the top of the order or not. The former India cricketer also mentioned that if Yashasvi does well and Rohit fails, it will put pressure on the latter in the matches to come.

“It will just create a headache for the future and nothing else, if they open with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma and demote Shubman Gill. Now, if he scores runs there, he will be thinking, should I go back to the top or not?" Tiwary said while speaking on Cricbuzz.

“So, I have no idea what they are trying to do at all. I see a massive lack of clarity here, but it feels good to see Jaiswal play, because he deserves to play all formats. If Rohit Sharma somehow doesn’t fire today, then there will be a lot of mental pressure from the outside," Tiwary added.

While Yashasvi didn't have a great outing, getting dismissed for just four, Rohit contributed nicely with a quickfire 48 off 39 balls. However, Shubman proved to be the star of the show for India. The 26-year-old slammed 154 off 110 balls, hitting 22 fours and two sixes. Ishan Kishan deserves a special mention too for his 79-ball 125, a knock comprising 14 fours and seven sixes.
📢‘The last two Indian-born players to play for Australia’ - Lisa Sthalekar reacts as Nikhil Chaudhary creates history

India-born all-rounder Nikhil Chaudhary etched his name into Australian cricket history after making his debut for Australia in the first T20I against Bangladesh on Wednesday, August 17, at the Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram.

The 30-year-old was named in Australia’s Playing XI as a leg-spinning all-rounder, becoming the first India-born male cricketer in more than six decades to represent the Australian men’s team.

Following the landmark achievement, former Australia women’s captain Lisa Sthalekar came up with a witty reaction on social media. Sharing a graphic featuring herself and Chaudhary.

“The last two Indian born players to play for Australia in the last 60 years. Cap number 117,” she wrote.

For the unversed, she earlier had jokingly responded to an X user who had claimed that Chaudhary is the first-ever Indian born to play for Australia, reminding the user of her achievements.

While several players of Indian origin, including Gurinder Sandhu and Tanveer Sangha, have represented Australia, Chaudhary became the first India-born male cricketer to play for the national side since Gujarat-born leg-spinner Rex Sellers, who featured in a Test against India in Kolkata in 1964.

Sthalekar herself was born in Pune before being adopted by Australian parents and later became one of the most successful cricketers in Australia’s history. She represented Australia in 187 international matches, captained the side, and won four World Cups during her illustrious career.

Born in Delhi, Chaudhary began his domestic career in India and represented Punjab between 2017 and 2019. He made his senior T20 debut in January 2017 and went on to play 12 matches in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy along with two List A games in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

His career took a dramatic turn during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, Chaudhary travelled to Australia to visit his uncle in Queensland. However, due to border restrictions and lockdown measures, he was unable to return to India.

What initially appeared to be an unexpected setback ultimately transformed into a life-changing opportunity. Chaudhary continued his cricketing journey in Australia, worked his way through the domestic circuit, and eventually earned a maiden national call-up.

Against Bangladesh , he had a decent outing with the ball, picking up a wicket while giving away just 14 runs in two overs.

📢Should Ruturaj Gaikwad have been in India's ODI squad vs Afghanistan?

Ruturaj Gaikwad (Source : BCCI on X)

India 's series against Afghanistan serves as an early platform for the team to test out their bench strength and incorporate newer names into the set-up as they gear up for the ODI World Cup in 2027, the trophy which they heartbreakingly lost to Australia at home in 2023. With multiple senior names missing through injury or workload management, the series offers new players a platform to shine and stake a claim to don the blue jersey.

One such player is Ruturaj Gaikwad . The batter from Maharashtra has been in and around the Indian set-up in multiple formats but has yet to stake a major claim for a regular spot in the side. A surprise recall to the ODI side came when South Africa came visiting in late 2025, where he scored a stellar 105 in the second ODI in Raipur, his maiden century in the format. This call-up came on the back of brilliant performances for India A and was his first rodeo in ODIs with the national side since 2023. With the talismanic Virat Kohli missing the series with a hamstring injury, opening a spot at one drop, questions over Gaikwad's inclusion have been prominent, due to his ability to anchor the innings and his record in the format.

The 37-year-old Kohli is not getting any younger. While he might still be at his mesmerising best with the bat, his place in the side could come into question, with age not being on his side. Despite this, Kohli and fellow veteran Rohit Sharma have both iterated their desire to represent the team in Africa in late 2027. If India decides to move on from their mercurial veterans, Gaikwad would immediately be considered a serious contender for a role at one-drop.

The 29-year-old has a stellar List-A record. In 102 matches, the right-handed batter has scored 5264 runs at a stellar average of 59.14 and a strike rate of 101.48. He has scored 20 half-centuries and 21 centuries, a testament to his conversion rate and being able to score big runs.

He excels at rotating the strike and carrying momentum through the middle overs and has time and again proved to be an excellent strokemaker and a brilliant player of spin. Currently playing for India A in the tri-series in Sri Lanka, he started the series with a brilliant century against Sri Lanka A and a well-made 66 against Afghanistan A. His 101 against the Lankans was a brilliant knock where he looked calm and composed in conditions favouring spinners.

While his recent form and abilities suggest that he may be a perfect like-for-like option at one-drop for the veteran Kohli, the further nitty-gritties of his game do not boost much confidence. While Ruturaj excels at anchoring innings, he has often been found wanting when it comes to his power game.

In the recently concluded IPL 2026, the CSK skipper was criticised for his low strike rate of 123 across the season, failing to make use of the powerplay while opening the batting, and being accused of playing without intent. He has also often been found wanting against quality pace bowling, often nicking off against outswingers and having trouble against hit-the-deck bowling. With the next ODI World Cup being in Africa, relying on Gaikwad as a batting option could seem a dangerous proposition.

Gautam Gambhir's side went with southpaw Ishan Kishan in their team at one drop in the first ODI, highlighting the favourability for a batter who has multiple gears. Kishan has recently found himself in favour within the Indian set-up after stellar performances in domestic cricket and a game-changing run at number three in India's victorious 2026 T20 World Cup run. These performances have prompted a look in with India's ODI side, with whom Kishan already has scored a stellar double century.

The fact that he also keeps wickets gives added flexibility to the side. Waiting in the wings is another southpaw in Devdutt Padikkal , who averages over 80 after 42 List A games. He also displayed an improved power game in the 2026 IPL, where he was one of the key batters for the champion
s, Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

The team's insistence on a player who has a power game, combined with glaring problem areas in his game, leaves question marks over Gaikwad's selection. While he seems to be the like-for-like replacement for Kohli due to the roles they play as batting anchors, Gaikwad's inclusion would just prove to be a stopgap solution until the veteran returns.

Taking Kohli's age factor into consideration, it would be wiser for the management to use this opportunity to try to groom a true successor. With their next ODI assignment being in England in July, giving Kohli ample time to recover, it would be rather unwise to fill that gap for just one series.

📢Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav: Who has the better T20 captaincy record?

SKY x Shreyas Iyer (Source: Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images and Ayush Kumar/Getty Images)

India are set to embark on a new era of T20 cricket under a brand new captain. Following the conclusion of the 2026 Indian Premier League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decided to replace Suryakumar Yadav with Shreyas Iyer as not only the captain of the 20-over side but also as a batter in the first-choice playing XI.

It was a brave decision from the management to sack the captain who guided India to their third T20 World Cup title on home soil earlier in 2026. Suryakumar's form with the bat, however, had dwindled under his captaincy. The right-handed batter averaged just 28.65 in the 52 matches where he took the armband.

Shreyas, on the other hand, has proved his worth as a T20 skipper in the IPL and is one of the few skippers to lead a side to the title. The 31-year-old, however, has not represented India in a T20I since 2023, making the decision to recall him to the side and giving the captaincy even bolder.

Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav: Leadership Styles

Both Shreyas and Suryakumar have distinctive leadership styles, which have led to tremendous success on the field. Shreyas has a bold and captivating personality, which is evident in his captaincy. He likes to make the important decisions and do things in his own way. The 31-year-old also likes to be the centre of attention whilst fielding and is renowned for his instinctive and inclusive leadership.

Suryakumar, on the other hand, is known as a 'players' captain'. One of the finest qualities that the 35-year-old possesses is his empowerment of youngsters on the side. Under his captaincy, the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Arshdeep Singh flourished and reached new heights in their respective international careers. The hard-hitting batter also has a calming presence on the field and is not seen as too animated.

Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav: Achievements as captain

Suryakumar Yadav

Led India to the 2026 T20 World Cup title, only the third captain to do so.

Helped India claim the 2025 Asia Cup title.

Not lost a bilateral T20I series during his tenure as captain.

Shreyas Iyer

Led Kolkata Knight Riders to the 2024 Indian Premier League, only the second captain to do so.

Took the Punjab Kings to only their second IPL final in 2024.

Guided the Delhi Capitals to their only IPL final in 2020, thus being the only captain in the tournament's history to take three franchises to the final.

Conclusion

While Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain for India's T20I side, Suryakumar will be continuing to fight for a spot back in the Indian team. However, it does not mean that it is the end of road for Surya's career with the Indian team. Shreyas will look to provide his experience from the domestic circuit and act as a successor for the departing leader.

While it cannot be said that one is better than another, both have their strengths and weaknesses where Surya has already done enough to impress fans, while Shreyas has a point to prove in his new era as T20I skipper.

Australia Women (Photo by Annabel Lee-Ellis-ICC/ICC via Getty Images)

How did Match 9 of the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 go between Australia Women and Bangladesh Women?

Australia Women defeated Bangladesh Women comprehensively by nine wickets in the ninth match of the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2026 at Headingley, Leeds, on Wednesday, June 17.

Sophie Molineux won the toss and had no hesitation in electing to field first. There was plenty of swing on offer, and the likes of Megan Schutt and Kim Garth had field days out in the middle. All-rounders Ellyse Perry and Annabel Sutherland also contributed nicely, using the seam-friendly conditions to their advantage. Even Molineux, who is a left-arm spinner, was seen bowling inswinging arm-balls for a major part of his spell.

The Bangladesh batters couldn't break the shackles as the run rate rarely touched four an over in their innings.
