Reports: Vaibhav Sooryavanshi got sledged by Vishen Halambage since start of the series
The 21-year-old reportedly jibed the Indian batter about his participation in the IPL, saying, 'go home, this is not the IPL,' and other remarks along those lines.

India's young 15-year-old prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi , was involved in a heated exchange with Sri Lankan cricketer Vishen Halambage during the Sri Lanka A vs India A clash at Dambulla on June 15.
After India had lost the game in the Super Over, Sooryavanshi and fellow batter Suryansh Shedge were seen to be engaged in a heated exchange with the Sri Lankan team, following which the young southpaw pushed Halambage, which saw matters get even more intense, before wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella diffused the situation.
In a further development, as reported by Cricbuzz, it has been stated that Halambage had been trying to get under the skin of the young southpaw since the first game on June 9. India won that match in dramatic fashion by eight runs, holding their nerve to defend a total of 278.
It has been reported that Halambage had been sledging Sooryavanshi during the second game as well, when India were batting, which continued into the Super Over. The 21-year-old reportedly jibed the Indian batter about his participation in the IPL, saying, 'Go home; this is not the IPL', and made similar provocative remarks along those lines.
Further reports mention that a few senior Sri Lankan players who know the young starlet through the IPL have approached him to express their regret over the incident. It was also stated that certain members of the Sri Lanka A team believed that they should apologise to the Indians. It was unclear whether such an apology was conveyed to the Indian team or to the player, but the topic of the altercation, and whether to apologise, was discussed in the hosts' dressing room after the game.
The altercation was the culmination of a series of events that marred the end of the clash between the two teams. There were multiple heated discussions between Tilak Varma and the umpires, first surrounding the commencement of the Super Over amid bad light concerns and a further altercation over a controversial no-ball call during the Super Over bowled by Arshad Khan .

How did Match 8 of the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 go between England Women and Ireland Women?
England Women managed an easy win against Ireland at the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 clash during Match 8 on Tuesday, June 16. Completing a clinical four-wicket victory with 15 balls to spare, as they chased down the 119-run target with utmost comfort at the Rose Bowl, Southampton.
The game had started with Ireland coming in to bat after England won the toss and opted to field first. The hosts dominated right from the start, allowing the Gaby Lewis-led side to compile only 38 runs in the powerplay, losing three wickets in the process. Orla Prendergast tried to steady the momentum from there and was complemented by Louise Little with a 15-ball 26 towards the end to take Ireland to 118-9 after 20.
England did not do exceptionally well in the powerplay either, managing only 35 for the loss of three wickets. But Nat Sciver-Brunt (48 off 37), their experienced skipper, managed to put in 48 on the board alongside Heather Knight (26 off 23). Prendergast shone with the ball as well, taking 2-17, but it wasn't enough, as England breached the finishing line in the eighteenth over.
Top batting performance of the match: Nat Sciver-Brunt
Sciver-Brunt came into the middle in a dangerous situation, as England were in some sort of trouble having lost three in the powerplay. However, her steady knock ensured that there were no major hiccups later. However, she felt a calf strain, forcing her to retire herself out of the innings, falling just a couple of runs short of a half-century. Nonetheless, she did her job well to make sure her side did not falter.

Top bowling performance of the match: Sophie Ecclestone
Ecclestone , like she does so often, was the best performer with the ball for England. Her three-wicket haul included the big wicket of Rebecca Stokell, as she also helped her side stem the flow of runs, implying constant pressure on the opposition. Towards the end of her spell, she provided a couple of breakthroughs to keep the Irishwomen at her mercy.

📢West Indies announce Test squad for WTC series against Sri Lanka
West Indies (Photo by Daniel Prentice/Gallo Images/Getty Images)
The West Indies have announced their squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, commencing on Thursday, June 25. Roston Chase leads the side, which sees the return of some other important players as the island nation looks to bounce back in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Wicketkeeper Joshua De Silva and Amir Jangoo lead the list of returnees to the international setup following excellent campaigns in the West Indies Championship, their version of a First-Class competition. De Silva ended the recent 2026 edition of the tournament as the leading run-getter, hitting 413 runs at an average of 59, whilst captaining Trinidad & Tobago to the title. Meanwhile, his domestic teammate Jangoo ended as the second-highest run-scorer with 411, averaging 68.50.
West Indies' fast-bowling department also gets a boost with the return of Shamar and Alzarri Joseph. The duo missed the tour of India and New Zealand in 2025 due to their respective injuries. Their comeback will take the burden off Jayden Seales, with the trio expected to start the game in Antigua & Barbuda on June 25.
"Every Test series is an opportunity for us to grow as a team and strengthen our identity. Sri Lanka are a quality side, so we know we'll have to be at our best, but we're excited about the challenge ahead. For us, it's about playing with discipline, showing character when the game gets tough, and representing the West Indies with pride. The players have been putting in the work, and we're looking forward to putting on a strong display for our fans across the Caribbean," Coach Darren Sammy said in an official statement.
As things stand, a few Test players are participating in a training camp in Antigua, which originally started on June 12 and will be running for 10 days. However, players who took part in the preceding white-ball series joined a few days later. West Indies took home the T20I series 2-1 before losing the ODIs 1-0.

Should Shubman Gill take over Virat Kohli's No. 3 spot in ODIs?
Shubman Gill has made rapid strides in world cricket, especially in the 50-over format. He has decent numbers in the other two formats as well, but in ODI cricket, he is class personified.

Shubman Gill has made rapid strides in world cricket, especially in the 50-over format. He has decent numbers in the other two formats as well, but in ODI cricket, he is class personified.
After playing 62 ODIs since his debut in 2019, the right-handed batter has amassed 3037 runs at a staggering average of 57.30 and a commendable strike rate of 99.64. Shubman has notched up 18 half-centuries, eight tons, and one double-century. His highest score of 208 came against New Zealand in Hyderabad.
Shubman was appointed captain of the Indian team in Tests in May 2025, and he took over as the ODI skipper in October 2025. The 26-year-old will have a key role to play alongside Gautam Gambhir as India prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup in 2027, which is going to be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
Should Shubman Gill take over Virat Kohli's No. 3 spot in ODIs?
Shubman has played mostly as an opener in ODI cricket. Out of the 62 innings he has played in the 50-over format, only five have come at the No. 3 position, while the remaining 57 have been as an opener.
Shubman does have an average of 53.20 and a strike rate of 102.7 in the limited opportunities he has had at the No. 3 spot. However, should he take up the No. 3 role in ODI cricket permanently?
It has often been said that opening is the best position to bat in white-ball cricket as there is not much swing on offer. The legendary Sachin Tendulkar batted at No. 4 during the majority of his Test career. However, in ODIs, he used to bat at the top.
Shubman has batted at No. 3 in Test cricket in the past, and he has the technical expertise to take up the role. He is equally adept at scoring runs against pace and spin. Like Virat Kohli , Shubman is lightning-quick between the wickets and can rotate strike when the field is spread out during the middle overs.
There is no immediate need, however, for Shubman to play at No. 3, as Kohli is firing on all cylinders at that spot. The former India captain has retired from Tests and T20Is and has set his sights on winning the ODI World Cup next year. There is a popular saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." India should follow that philosophy for now.
After the ODI World Cup, which Kohli decides to bid adieu to international cricket altogether, only then can Shubman think of moving down to the No. 3 spot. This will give India a chance to exploit other potent options at the top of the order.
In Indian cricket, there is no shortage of batting talent. A plethora of them are openers, waiting to make a name for themselves on the international circuit. Abhishek Sharma is waiting in the wings, having already become the No. 1 batter in ICC rankings in T20Is. The 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will also keep knocking on the door, having recently earned his maiden call-up to the T20I side.
Yashasvi Jaiswal is India's backup opener during the ongoing three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. He can be a force to be reckoned with, as he has proven his credentials in the longest format of the game. The likes of Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh will also continue pushing for spots as opening batters.
If Shubman decides to drop down to No. 3, these players will be able to play in their preferred spot and hope to cement their place in the squad. However, the Indian team management can think about such a transition phase once Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are done with international cricket.

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt has played down the severity of her calf strain after retiring out during their 2026 Women's T20 World Cup game against Ireland on Tuesday, June 16, in Southampton. The hosts had to work hard to beat their neighbours, securing a four-wicket win whilst chasing 119.
The right-handed batter came into the World Cup after barely recovering from a calf injury, which she picked up whilst representing The Blaze in the One Day Cup in April. She missed the preceding white-ball series against New Zealand and India before returning to full fitness in the warm-up matches of the showpiece tournament.
With England needing just nine runs to win, Sciver-Brunt felt discomfort in the same calf and left the field, retiring out when she was 48. They lost Freya Kemp soon after, before Dani Gibson and Charlie Dean took them across the finish line.
Despite leaving the field injured, Sciver-Brunt has played down the seriousness of the strain and called it a precautionary act. England still have three more group stage matches to go and are widely expected to qualify for the knockouts from their group.
"[I] felt a bit of tightness in my calf and didn't want to push it," Nat Sciver-Brunt said after the match, via BBC Sport.
Nat Sciver-Brunt's wife, Katherine, also downplayed the England captain's injury after witnessing her behaviour.
"Nat hasn't been crying and that's a good sign. You know when you've done something bad. She's not that easy to read, but from what I'm seeing, it's not that bad," Katherine Sciver-Brunt said on BBC Test Match Special.
Despite only returning from injury, Nat Sciver-Brunt has shown tremendous form with the bat. She scored 57 against India in a warm-up game in Cardiff before hitting 46 not out and 48 (retired hurt) against Sri Lanka and Ireland in the opening two matches of the Women's T20 World Cup.
It is worth mentioning that, should she not be fit to play in England's third game of the tournament against Scotland on Saturday, vice-captain Charlie Dean can deputise, as she did during the New Zealand and India series.

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) has unveiled its central contract list for the ongoing 2026-27 season, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the BlackCaps following the retirement of legendary batter Kane Williamson .
A total of 20 players have been awarded central contracts for the upcoming cycle, which runs from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2027. Among the notable inclusions are experienced batter Devon Conway and fast bowler Blair Tickner, both of whom have earned recalls to the contracted players’ list.
Conway returns to the central contract setup after spending the previous two years on a casual agreement with NZC. The left-handed batter has now committed himself to being available for all international assignments during the upcoming contract period, paving the way for his return to the centrally contracted group.
Meanwhile, Tickner’s inclusion comes on the back of an impressive run of performances across formats. The 32-year-old seamer has emerged as a dependable option for New Zealand, claiming four or more wickets in five of his last eight international innings. He also registered his maiden five-wicket haul at the international level during the one-off Test against Ireland at Stormont last month.
New Zealand head coach Bob Walter lauded Tickner’s development and highlighted the importance of strengthening the team’s pace-bowling resources ahead of a busy schedule of Test cricket.
“Blair has worked extremely hard over the past few years and added new levels to his game. He’s an excellent team man and has stepped into various roles for the side over the past few months and excelled in them,” Bob Walter said in a statement as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
“It’s important we continue to nurture that depth in our bowling stocks, especially with a heavy diet of red-ball cricket over the next 12 months, so to have Blair contracted full-time will help maintain that depth,” he continued.
Walter also expressed his satisfaction at seeing Conway return to the central contract list, stressing the value of having an experienced multi-format player available during a crucial period for New Zealand cricket.
“Devon has been a regular member of the side in all three formats for some time now, even whilst on a casual contract, so it’s great to have a player of his calibre back on the central contract list, especially with the amount of exciting cricket coming up,” he concluded.
With a packed international calendar ahead and a transition phase underway after Williamson’s departure, New Zealand will be hoping the return of Conway and the continued rise of Tickner help provide stability and depth across formats during the 2026/27 season.
New Zealand men's centrally contracted players revealed:
Tom Blundell, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, Mitchell Hay, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls , Will O'Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, Will Young

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi throws away a flying start once again for India A

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has shown glimpses of his surreal batting talent during the ongoing tri-nation series in Sri Lanka. However, he hasn't been able to convert his blistering starts into substantial scores. The pattern continued on Wednesday, June 17, at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium.
In a must-win match, India's last in the round-robin phase, Tilak Varma lost the toss, and Afghanistan A opted to bowl first. Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya smashed 75 runs in eight overs against a potent Afghanistan bowling attack. However, the former was dismissed by 20-year-old left-arm pacer Faridoon Dawoodzai. The Bihar batter belted 38 runs off 28 deliveries, hitting four fours and two sixes.
Dawoodzai bowled a short delivery, and Sooryavanshi went for the pull shot to the leg-side. However, the ball hit the bottom of the bat and flew high towards cover point, and Khalid Taniwal took a comfortable catch.
Sooryavanshi lived a charmed life on Wednesday. He seemed to be caught by Dawoodzai in the second over of the match, but on replays, it was evident that some part of the ball was touching the surface. Sooryavanshi also hit a few balls in the air, but they didn't land in the hands of the fielder. However, his luck ran out in the eighth over.
How has Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fared in Sri Lanka?
After amassing 776 runs in 16 innings at a staggering strike rate of 237.31 in IPL 2026, Sooryavanshi deservedly earned a place in India A's squad for the tri-series in the Island Nation. The youngest Orange Cap winner, however, has not been able to live up to his potential thus far.
The 15-year-old has registered scores of 14 (12), 44 (22), 21 (14), and 38 (28). This totals 117 runs, and he is averaging 29.25 with a strike rate of 164.58. If India A do make it to the final, Sooryavanshi would want to get off to a good start yet again and not throw it away.

📢‘Have big shoes to fill’ - Harsh Dubey, Manav Suthar advised amid transition in Indian cricket

Indian cricket is in full transition mode with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja nearing the end of their legendary careers. The trio has been an integral part of Indian cricket for the majority of the last two decades, but things are not the same anymore with the Indian team wanting to build the future prospects.
Acknowledging the ongoing transition phase in the Indian team, the newly appointed spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule shed some light, believing that the new generation of spin bowlers are getting ready for the international stage. Harsh Dubey recently made his international debut in the first ODI between India and Afghanistan, while Manav Suthar impressed with a six-for on his Test debut.
“This is a transition time for spinners. I feel Harsh and other youngsters who are coming in and have been given chances, will realise that they have big shoes to fill. They have the capabilities, they have the potential but I think the more they will play, the more they will settle down. Harsh is a player who definitely has that potential and can be a good all-rounder,” Bahutule said as quoted by Indian Express.
Harsh had a great outing at Dharamsala on his debut, picking up three wickets. Acknowledging that, Bahutule further added that the left-arm spinner will improve with time and has got all the skills to succeed at the international stage.
“He (Dubey) is a player for the future. He has got the skills, he has got a good temperament and has proved it not only in domestic cricket, but that one game which he got last time, he came back very strongly and did very well. So moving ahead, I am sure the more he plays, the more experience he gets and definitely he will enhance his skill,” Bahutule added.
On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja was not included in the ongoing ODI series against Afghanistan, and his future in ODI cricket is in doubt. Bahutule further paid his tribute to Jadeja’s immense contribution to Indian cricket.
“Jadeja is very experienced, the way he has performed and the way he has contributed towards Indian cricket is phenomenal with the bat and the ball,” he concluded.
The second ODI of the ongoing three-match series is scheduled to be played on June 17 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.

India and Afghanistan travel to Uttar Pradesh for the second One Day International (ODI), to be played at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, on Wednesday, June 17. The Men in Blue come into the game knowing that a win will help them secure the series with a game to spare.
Shubman Gill's side secured a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the first ODI in Dharamshala, chasing down 195 in the second innings in a rain-affected game.
IND vs AFG: Toss Update
Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi called the coin toss correct and opted to bowl first. The 31-year-old stated that the pitch looks fresh and could offer spin in the first innings, something which remains their strength. Indian captain Shubman Gill also wanted to bowl first in Lucknow, but will now hope to post a defendable total in the first innings.
IND vs AFG: India make three changes, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prince Yadav come in
As far as team changes are concerned, India were forced to make three due to fitness and illness concerns. Kuldeep Yadav , who is widely regarded as the side's main spinner, returns to the playing XI in place of Harsh Dubey. Other changes include Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prince Yadav coming in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prasidh Krishna, with the latter making his international debut.
CSK vs LSG: What did the captains say?
Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan Captain
"We want to bowl first. The reason is the wicket looks fresh and I think it will be spinning in the first innings. There is a chance of that, so that's why we want to bowl. In the last game we played really well, but we were missing in the partnerships. We just had one good partnership, but after that we threw away our wickets easily. So that's the reason we didn't finish on the winning side. So hopefully the boys learn from it and come back stronger in today's game. (On the spirit in the Afghanistan camp) I think our boys have a lot of passion for cricket. And it's the ability and the skills of the players that we are doing well and hopefully that we improve day by day. We have three changes. Nabi is sick, he's not feeling well and Azmat got injured in the practice session. And also Zia Sharifi is not playing. So we have three guys - Bilal (Sami) ... and ... Darwish Rasooli is debuting today."
Shubman Gill, India Captain
"Honestly, we would have bowled first as well, because of our combination. We were forced to play with only five bowlers in this match. So, just because of that, we would have bowled first as well. It's all about just being in difficult situations and getting that experience. If you're chasing, have the habit of chasing the big scores, and if you're defending, how can we defend those low totals, and how clinical can we be with our bowling. We have got three changes. Prince makes his debut. Nitish was unavailable for selection in this match. He had some issues with his quad. So we have got Kuldeep and Jaiswal in."

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has ruled out any reprimand for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the 15-year-old pushed a Sri Lankan player during the tri-series.
The incident happened after India A lost the Super Over to Sri Lanka A on Monday, June 15, at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. Sooryavanshi needed to score 14 runs off the last three balls to take India A to victory. The southpaw tried hard but couldn't take his team over the line.
After the match concluded, as the Indian batters Suryansh Shedge and Sooryavanshi were making their way back to the pavilion, the former lost his cool and confronted the celebrating Sri Lankan players. Sooryavanshi also became part of the argy-bargy and eventually pushed Vishen Halambage, who had reportedly been sledging the Indian teenager since he set foot on Sri Lankan soil.
“We will let our players concentrate on the tournament, and they should not be distracted by any collateral issues," Saikia told Sportstar.
Meanwhile, Halambage has reportedly been fined by Sri Lanka Cricket for his role in the post-match altercation. As per Cricbuzz, match referee Pradeep Jeyapragash imposed the sanction based on the umpires’ reports, without a formal disciplinary hearing.
Sooryavanshi has received severe criticism on social media, with a section of fans proposing that he should be fined for putting his hands on a fellow player. However, some sections of fans and former cricketers have also backed the youngster, including India's spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule.
"He will learn, he is a young kid with a lot of responsibility of representing India. I'm sure he will not repeat it, and such incidents can be avoided," the former Mumbai captain was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
India A are currently playing an important game against Afghanistan A in Dambulla on Wednesday, June 17. A defeat in this fixture would knock India out of the tournament, setting up a final between Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A.
