Cook's remarks have resurfaced after Bethell was ruled out of this year's The Hundred due to a knee injury, a setback that has denied him valuable match practice ahead of England's upcoming Test series against Pakistan. The injury sustained during the ODI series against India has also cast doubt on his availability for the red-ball assignment.
Speaking on a podcast with Mo Bobat and Dinesh Karthik, Cook reiterated his stance, arguing that England's priorities should come ahead of the IPL.
"What I'm saying, I think this is where it's really important. I'm here for the Test match in a week's time, and one of our No. 3 players (is sitting on the bench)... I think it's really important that English cricket is more important than an IPL or a franchise. That's what I think, and apparently, I'm not allowed to think it, because the IPL is the best tournament in the world," the former skipper said on the Stick to Cricket podcast.
Cook also questioned whether another season on the bench in the IPL was beneficial for Bethell's growth, stressing that regular game time would have been more valuable.
"So I'm taking it from Jacob Bethel, who sat on the bench the year before and learnt from all those players, who then also sitting on the bench is not playing. I'm sitting here going, my No. 3 to the side I actually really want to win, which is England, no disrespect to RCB and all those franchises, I want England to be the most successful side."

Former Australia opener David Warner has pleaded guilty to a drink-driving offence in Waverley Local Court, with his lawyer Bobby Hill formally entering the guilty plea on his behalf to a mid-range drink-driving charge stemming from an Easter Sunday incident. Warner, the Sydney Thunder captain in Australia's Big Bash League, was not present during the court proceedings. Sentencing is scheduled for August 18.
The incident occurred on April 5 when Warner was stopped in Sydney's eastern suburbs after initially failing to complete a roadside breath test, and was later taken to Maroubra Police Station where he recorded a reading of 0.104. This reading was more than twice the legal limit. Under current traffic laws, Warner faces a minimum six-month driving ban, a possible fine up to 2,200 AUD, and up to nine months imprisonment. Hill shared details about Warner's decision-making that Easter Sunday.
"David accepts on Easter Sunday he was drinking three glasses of wine with his friends, at his friend's apartment, he got into a car and he drove. He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get into his car instead of taking an Uber," Hill said outside court, as quoted by cricket.com.au.

India spinner Kuldeep Yadav has joined the English county of Yorkshire for the ongoing One Day Cup and three matches in the County Championship in September. The 31-year-old is available for selection for the White Roses' next 50-over game against Glamorgan in Neath on Friday, July 24.
This will be the first time Kuldeep will travel to English shores to compete in domestic cricket. The left-arm spinner will return to List A cricket for the first time since facing Afghanistan last month.
“I’m really pleased to be joining Yorkshire and grateful for this opportunity. It will be a real privilege to represent a Club with Yorkshire’s proud history. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge of playing in English conditions and after speaking with the management, I became really excited to join up with the team and I’m looking forward to making a positive contribution during my time at Headingley," Kuldeep Yadav said on Yorkshire's official website.
