Shubman Gill won his first ODI series as captain of the Indian team after the Men in Blue whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0 on Saturday, June 20. Former India batter Manoj Tiwary believes that he isn't a 'born leader' but backed him to improve with experience.
After Shubman replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI team, India lost a three-match series to Australia 1-2 in October 2025. Earlier this year, New Zealand defeated India by a same margin. However, Shubman has finally tasted success as a skipper in the 50-over format, with the Asian giants defeating Afghanistan comprehensively in the recently-concluded series.
"This series went well for him as captain. The more series he captains, the better he will get. He is not a 'born leader' yet, but he will learn. Everything comes naturally to a born leader, and then there is someone like Shubman Gill who learns with time, and that is why it is important for Rohit and Virat, and even KL to stay in the team and advise him. The mistakes that they made during their captaincy, they will not let him repeat it," Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.
"Also, when you have so many good players, the pressure of captaincy reduces a bit. When you have the number one pacer and spinner, you just have to bring them on, and they will do their job. So, this is the luxury you have in Team India, because we have top, top players. Bring any bowler at any point of time, they will deliver," he added.
Shubman didn't just lead the team well, but he also played a key role with the bat. The Punjab batter finished with 238 runs in two innings at an average of 238 and a strike rate of 135.23. He was the highest run-getter by a distance and went on to win the Player of the Series award. His next test will be a tough one, as India will play three ODIs against England in the United Kingdom next month.

MI New York veteran Kieron Pollard rolled back the years with a sensational unbeaten century against Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026, but his heroic effort ultimately came in a losing cause at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on June 21.
While Pollard’s hundred grabbed headlines, one particular moment during the chase sparked memories of one of cricket’s most famous on-field confrontations. In the ninth over, Washington Freedom pacer Asif Mehmood delivered a ball that Pollard struck straight back towards him. Mehmood collected the ball and appeared to gesture as if he would throw it at the batter. In response, Pollard instinctively raised his bat before the bowler decided against taking any further action.
The incident immediately reminded fans of Pollard’s memorable face-off with Mitchell Starc during the Indian Premier League several years ago. In that famous encounter, tensions flared after Starc threw the ball towards Pollard, who reacted by lifting his bat in a dramatic standoff. The similarity of the latest incident quickly became a talking point among cricket fans on social media.
The bowler charged through in his follow-through… and suddenly it felt like we'd seen this movie before. 😮💨🔥#KieronPollard found himself in a familiar moment, reminding fans of that iconic Pollard-Starc face-off from years gone by.

As for the match itself, Washington Freedom produced a batting masterclass after being put in to bat. Opening batter Mitchell Owen was the star of the show, smashing a remarkable 155 runs off just 68 deliveries. The Australian batter tore into the MI New York bowling attack, striking 11 boundaries and 13 sixes at a stunning strike rate of 227.94.
Owen’s explosive innings powered Washington Freedom to a mammoth total of 245/5 in their allotted 20 overs. MI New York’s bowlers struggled to contain the run flow, although five different bowlers managed to pick up a wicket each.
In reply, MI New York needed a strong start but found themselves under pressure against a disciplined Freedom bowling attack. Pollard, however, kept his side in the hunt with a vintage display of power-hitting. The former West Indies captain remained unbeaten on exactly 100 from 56 balls, hitting 11 fours and four sixes while maintaining a strike rate of 178.57.
Despite Pollard’s brilliance, MI New York fell short of the daunting target, finishing on 215/6 in their 20 overs and losing by 30 runs. Washington Freedom skipper Glenn Maxwell also made a valuable contribution with the ball, returning figures of 2/37 from his four-over spell to help secure an important victory for his side.

📢Virat Kohli asked why his branded shoes cost same as Test runs, reply leaves fans in splits
Virat Kohli (Source: @rokomahi on YT)
While Virat Kohli appeared for the launch of his homegrown shoe brand at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, a reporter asked a cheeky question to the cricketer about the quirky price point of the flagship footwear.
On Sunday, June 21, popular host Danish Sait asked the cricketer as to why the price of the shoes was kept at INR 9230, exactly the amount of runs he scored in Tests. Sait further asked if he would return to Test cricket in order to add some more runs, eventually getting to increase the price of the shoes. However, a humorous side of Kohli was on the cards, as he gave a straightforward response to the question.
"The Red shoes have been priced at Rs 9230 (Virat’s Test runs), so would you want to return to Test cricket and add more runs to make the shoe make more money?," Sait asked.
"Na na I would rather undersell, I am done with Test cricket," Virat replied humorously as quoted by Sportstak.
What is Virat Kohli's record in Test cricket?
It is worth mentioning that Kohli is among the most celebrated Test cricketers of the 21st century. A vital cog in India's Test set-up after the departure of MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar , Kohli took over the reigns as a solid performer for the Indian team in the red-ball format since 2013. The stalwart went on to amass 9230 runs in the format at an average of 46.85.
Kohli's consistency and love for Test cricket were quite evident, as he not only captained India to famous wins away from home but also scored truckloads of runs around the globe. His conversion rate in the longest format of the game was superb, as he accounted for 31 half-centuries and 30 centuries in Test cricket, which also includes six double hundreds, all coming as captain.
The New Delhi-born is also the most successful captain for India, as the team won 40 out of the 68 matches he captained in. He retired from the format in May 2025 after a lopsided run in the format over the last few years. Nonetheless, he will be remembered as the flag bearer of the batch of cricketers that made watching the five-day game interesting.

Mohammad Kaif said that India need the experience of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli during their 2027 ODI World Cup campaign. His statement came after the former played a brilliant knock in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday, June 20.
Rohit scored 16 and 48 in the first two ODIs, but on Saturday, he capitalised on his start and smashed 79 off 69 balls. Fellow opener Yashasvi Jaiswal also scored an unbeaten century (110 off 86) as India chased down a 219-run target in 28.4 overs with nine wickets to spare. The Afghanistan side was whitewashed 0-3 by the Indians.
Kaif wondered why so many people want Rohit to fail. The former India batter said that a few low scores here and there can't judge his class. He hoped that the former India captain would carry this form into the ODI World Cup next year, which is going to be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
"Can't really understand why so many people want Rohit Sharma to fail. It is admirable how he has taken this challenge head-on. He has led India to the Champions Trophy, scored against Australia, NZ and now made 79 against Afghanistan. A few low scores here and there can't judge his class. As cricket fans, we should wish that he carries this form into the 2027 World Cup. India needs the experience of Rohit and also Virat Kohli," Mohammad Kaif wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
India's next ODI assignment is against England. The Men in Blue will play five T20Is and three ODIs against the Three Lions next month.

How did the Final go between Sri Lanka A and India A? — Review, Turning Points & more
India A defeated Sri Lanka A by 66 runs to win the tri-series final at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on Sunday, June 21.
Sri Lankan captain Sahan Arachchige won the toss and opted to field first on Sunday. However, the move backfired as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Priyansh Arya got the visitors off to a flying start. The former was the wrecker-in-chief as he slammed an 11-ball half-century. Sooryavanshi was eventually dismissed for 94 after facing 29 balls.
Priyansh Arya and Ruturaj Gaikwad got starts but couldn't convert them into substantial scores. Tilak Varma scored a sedate half-century, as he made 67 off 90 balls. Kumar Kushagra and Vipraj Nigam also chipped in with handy contributions, but it seemed like Sri Lanka would restrict India to a total below 350.
However, Anukul Roy hit three sixes in the final over to help India A finish on 377/9 in 50 overs. The southpaw smashed 39 off just 15 balls.
In reply, Sri Lanka A lost the wicket of Avishka Fernando in the third over. Niroshan Dickwella and Nuwanidu Fernando wasted their starts. However, Sadeera Samarawickrama scored an enterprising half-century. Skipper Arachchige scored 38 off 40 balls, but he was dismissed by his opposite number in the 26th over as Sri Lanka A were struggling at 177/6.
Wanuja Sahan and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth stitched a defiant 77-run stand to give hope of a miraculous comeback. However, once they were dismissed for 62 and 39, respectively, it was only a matter of time before India A's win.

📢Ish Sodhi picks all-time T20 XI, ignores MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya [Exclusive]
Ish Sodhi
New Zealand's veteran leg-spinner Ish Sodhi recently picked his all-time T20 XI during an exclusive interaction with CricTracker. Sodhi has played 21 Tests, 54 ODIs, and 142 T20Is so far for the Black Caps. He is also an experienced campaigner when it comes to T20 cricket.
The 33-year-old has played 314 T20s, picked up 335 wickets at an average of 24.89 and a strike rate of 18.70. Despite being a wrist spinner, his economy rate is a decent 7.95. During his impressive career, Sodhi has played with and against some of the biggest players in the shortest format of the game.
He picked Chris Gayle and Rohit Sharma as his openers in the T20 format. The former is second on the list of leading run-getters in T20 cricket. Rohit, on the other hand, led India to the T20 World Cup title in 2024 and is also a five-time IPL-winning skipper. He also has the most runs by an Indian cricketer in T20I cricket.
Good friends, AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli , took the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively, in Sodhi's line-up. De Villiers is a former South African captain and a Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend. Meanwhile, Kohli needs no introduction as he is the highest run-getter in the IPL and second highest for India in T20Is.
Kieron Pollard, who recently surpassed Gayle's record to become the leading run-getter in T20 cricket, grabbed the No. 5 spot. The 39-year-old might have retired from international cricket, but he is firing on all cylinders in franchise leagues around the world.
Jos Buttler and Andre Russell were picked for the finisher's role at No. 6 and 7, respectively. While Buttler has the second-most centuries in the IPL, Russell is a two-time IPL Most Valuable Player (MVP) award winner.
In the spin-bowling department, there were no surprises whatsoever. Sodhi picked mystery spinner Sunil Narine at No. 8 and the talismanic leg-spinner Rashid khan at No. 9. Both of them have made batters dance to their tunes in international cricket as well as in franchise leagues.
Lastly, Sodhi picked Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood as his two frontline pacers. Bumrah won the Player of the Tournament award when India won the 2024 T20 World Cup under Rohit's captaincy. The former is also a multiple-time IPL winner. Josh Hazlewood, on the other hand, played crucial roles in the IPL in the last two seasons, as he helped the Royal Challengers Bengaluru become back-to-back champions.
