"No matter how big a player you are, you need runs, and the way Rohit batted today (Saturday), the rhythm was visible," Cheteshwar Pujara said after India's 3-0 whitewash of Afghanistan.

India whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0 in the three-match ODI series on Saturday, June 20. The final ODI was held at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The Men in Blue won the match by nine wickets, chasing down a 219-run target in just 28.4 overs.
Rohit Sharma , who had worked very hard at BCCI's Centre of Excellence (CoE) to regain fitness ahead of the series, scored 16 and 48 in the first two ODIs. However, in the third ODI, he enthralled fans with an exemplary batting display. The 39-year-old smashed 79 off just 69 balls, belting nine fours and three sixes. He stitched a 170-run stand with Yashasvi Jaiswal to take India to a position of strength.
Cheteshwar Pujara said that if Rohit had not gotten the runs in the third ODI, it would have built some pressure on him. The cricketer-turned-expert opined that Rohit would be relieved, having returned to form and praised the veteran player for his contributions while fielding.
"No matter how big a player you are, you need runs, and the way Rohit batted today (Saturday), the rhythm was visible. It was necessary for him to score runs. The team management is backing him, but as a player, when you don't score runs, the pressure on you mounts a little," the former India batter said during a discussion on JioHotstar.
"So he would have felt a little relieved that he is back in form. It will be slightly easier for him when he plays his next innings in England, and that wicket will also suit him. He also performed well in fielding. He took three catches. So, overall, it was a good day for him. He can go to England slightly relaxed," he added.
"Can you maintain your consistency when you play only one format?" - Cheteshwar Pujara on Rohit Sharma's place for 2027 ODI World Cup
Pujara said that while Rohit's experience would come in handy for India if he plays the 2027 ODI World Cup, maintaining consistency and fitness will be his biggest challenge in the coming months.
"The experience will definitely be useful, especially since the World Cup will happen in South Africa, and you will need experienced players there. The only question is about the fitness. Can you maintain your consistency when you play only one format? That will be the only question," he said.
Pujara also pointed out how Rohit learned from his mistake in the second ODI and played Rashid Khan much better on Saturday.
"He got out to Rashid Khan in the last match. The good thing in this match was how he rectified it. He wasn't playing him as a leg-spinner but as an off-spinner. He targeted the leg side on most shots and tried to play with the spin because Rashid's strength is not leg spin but the googlies," Pujara elaborated.

The BCCI has announced India's squad for the three-match ODI series against England, which begins on July 14. Shubman Gill will lead the side, while Shreyas Iyer has been named vice-captain. Virat Kohli also returns to the squad, although his participation remains subject to fitness clearance.
The Men in Blue have made only a few changes following the ODI series against Afghanistan. The biggest addition is the return of Jasprit Bumrah, who replaces Prince Yadav in the squad. The pace attack will feature Bumrah alongside Harshit Rana, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh, and Prasidh Krishna. The spin department includes Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar, while Nitish Kumar Reddy adds balance as a pace-bowling all-rounder.
Harsh Dubey, who played two matches and claimed four wickets in the Afghanistan series, has not been included in the squad. Meanwhile, Brar earned his place after impressing with his performances and disciplined spells during the Afghanistan tour.
Speaking about Kohli, the veteran batter was ruled out of the ODI series against Afghanistan after suffering a hamstring injury during the IPL 2026 final. However, he is set to undergo a fitness assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence on June 22. A successful clearance will make him available for the England ODI series.
Gill enjoyed a successful start to his ODI captaincy, leading India to a 3-0 series sweep over Afghanistan. The young skipper will now look to continue that momentum in England. The upcoming ODI series is expected to play a crucial role in India's preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
Before the ODI leg, India will take on England in a five-match T20I series, with Shreyas Iyer leading the side. The squad also features teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, and all eyes will be on the 15-year-old prodigy as he looks to make an impact on the international stage.

📢Varun Chakravarthy ruled out of Ireland series due to injury

In a big development, World No. 2 T20I bowler Varun Chakravarthy has been ruled out of India’s squad for the upcoming two-match T20I series against Ireland in Ireland.
He was originally named in the 15-man squad for this crucial away series, but since he has failed to recover from his toe injury, Chakravarthy has been released from Ireland series. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provided a crucial update on his rehab and recovery at the COE, Bengaluru. Meanwhile, they did not name any replacement for him.
“Varun Chakravarthy is in the final stages of his rehab at the BCCI COE following his left foot injury sustained in the TATA IPL 2026. He is ruled out of the T20I series against Ireland,” the statement read.
Since his debut for India in the 2021 T20 World Cup, the mystery spinner from Chennai has been an instrumental figure in India's white ball cricket, winning two ICC trophies, namely ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and T20 World Cup 2026.
The 34-year-old reportedly suffered an injury during Indian Premier League (2026) playing for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). During a match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) when he was struck by a ball, which resulted in hairline fracture in his left toe. Despite the injury, he was seen participating in the league for the three-time IPL champions, which reportedly angered the BCCI, with him being an integral part of India’s white ball plans.
When asked about the issue, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane gave an explanation saying that KKR physios are in touch with the BCCI physios.
“See, our team’s physios and the physios of BCCI and the Indian team, there was a discussion among them. I don’t get involved in that at all. That’s their department. My department is how’s the player’s mindset, does the player want to play or not, how big is the risk?” Rahane was quoted as saying Firstpost.
India’s updated squad for Ireland T20Is:
Shreyas Iyer (Captain), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Ishan Kishan (WK), Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma (Vice-Captain), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Prince Yadav, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Prasidh Krishna

England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson have been withdrawn from their respective County Championship fixtures, strongly indicating that both players are set to return for England's third Test against New Zealand, which begins at Trent Bridge on June 25.
The duo had been made unavailable for the second Test at The Oval while an investigation continued into an alleged breach of England's team curfew following the first Test victory at Lord's. However, both players were cleared to participate in domestic cricket during the ongoing County Championship round.
Stokes represented Durham against Northamptonshire and produced a timely reminder of his class, scoring 95 runs. It was his highest score in any form of cricket since his century against India in the fourth Test last July. Meanwhile, Atkinson turned out for Surrey and impressed with the ball, claiming four wickets in the first innings against Glamorgan.
Despite being initially named in their county sides, both players were withdrawn before the third day of their matches, further strengthening speculation that they will be recalled for the decisive third Test. Reports emerged on Thursday suggesting that Stokes is expected to resume captaincy duties at Trent Bridge, with Atkinson also likely to return to the playing XI.
The investigation into the pair's involvement in a late-night outing following England's win at Lord's remains ongoing. Neither the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) nor team management have officially confirmed the outcome of the inquiry. An official announcement regarding the squad for the third Test is expected only after the conclusion of the ongoing second Test at The Oval.
England have felt the absence of several key players in the second Test. Along with Stokes and Atkinson, Ollie Robinson was unavailable due to injury, while wicketkeeper Jamie Smith missed the match on paternity leave. As a result, England were forced into five changes from the side that won the opening Test and fielded an inexperienced lineup featuring three debutants.
New Zealand have taken full advantage of England's depleted resources and are in a strong position to level the series at 1-1, setting up a potentially thrilling decider at Trent Bridge.

India A’s teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi produced a breathtaking innings in the final against Sri Lanka A, smashing 94 runs off just 28 balls and helping his side post a massive total. The youngster, who had endured a difficult tournament leading up to the summit clash, saved his best performance for the biggest stage and left the cricketing world stunned with his explosive batting display.
Sooryavanshi had struggled for consistency earlier in the series and was also involved in an on-field altercation during a previous match against Sri Lanka A. In that game, India A failed to cross the line in a Super Over, and tensions boiled over after some Sri Lankan players allegedly provoked Sooryavanshi and his batting partner Suryansh Shedge. The incident resulted in the young batter shoving an opponent, drawing criticism from several former cricketers.
Former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar had even suggested that Sooryavanshi should have been dropped from the next match against Afghanistan A as a disciplinary measure. Taking to social media, Manjrekar wrote that if he were the India A coach or manager, he would have left the youngster out to send a message that physical confrontations on the field are unacceptable regardless of the provocation.
If I was India A coach or manager I would have left Vaibhav Suryavanshi out for this game v AFG. Only to let him know that’s it’s not OK to get physical on the field. Whatever the provocations.
— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) June 17, 2026
However, after witnessing Sooryavanshi’s extraordinary innings in the final, Manjrekar was full of praise. He remarked that the left-hander appeared to view 50-over cricket as a format where he could create even more destruction, especially with only two fielders allowed outside the circle during the first 10 overs.
Just realised Vaibhav looks at 50 overs cricket as a format where he can create even more mayhem!
What with 2 fielders outside the circle for 10 overs! & not 6. 😳👏👏👏#SonySports
— Sanjay Manjrekar (@sanjaymanjrekar) June 21, 2026
Sooryavanshi’s knock was historic in more ways than one. He raced to his maiden India A fifty in just 11 deliveries, breaking the previous List A record of a 12-ball fifty set by Kaushalya Weeraratne. His innings featured 10 fours and eight sixes as he dominated the powerplay and put Sri Lanka A under immense pressure from the outset.
India A eventually posted a commanding 377/9 in their 50 overs. Alongside Sooryavanshi’s 94, Tilak Varma contributed 67 runs, while Vipraj Nigam and Anukul Roy added valuable late runs. For Sri Lanka A, Kugathas Mathulan, Ravindu Fernando and Wanuja Sahan picked up two wickets each.
The young opener narrowly missed out on a century and came close to matching the fastest List A hundred record, currently held by Jake Fraser-McGurk, who reached the milestone in just 29 balls in 2023.

The All India Men's Senior Selection Committee picked India's ODI squad for the upcoming series against England in July, set to be played in the United Kingdom. While the biggest inclusion in the squad was the returning Virat Kohli, who missed out on the Afghanistan series at home with Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel also making a return, a few big names have been ignored by the selectors for different reasons.
Hardik Pandya, the star all-rounder, will continue undergoing his rehabilitation from the quadriceps injury which kept him out of action and is expected to return for the tour of Sri Lanka directly. Meanwhile, Prince Yadav and Harsh Dubey, both of whom made their respective international debuts against Afghanistan, have been sidelined as well. However, there are still a few senior names that continue to be out of favour.
Here are 3 unlucky players missing from India's ODI squad for England series
3. Yashasvi Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal (Photo by Rich Storry/Getty Images)
Yashasvi Jaiswal , the attacking batter, is yet to cement his spot in the ODI set-up despite being a proven opener for India's Test team. He has often warmed the bench, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill being the designated openers, while no other spot is vacant anywhere in order. With limited opportunities in the 50-over format since his debut in 2025, Jaiswal has been fairly impressive.
With Kohli out of the recent Afghanistan series, Jaiswal was given the opportunity, as Gill shifted to batting at number three. In the final ODI in Chennai, the Bhadohi-born batter left everyone in awe of his stroke-making skills, with a scintillating hundred at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium. After such a performance, one would expect to continue being part of the squad, but the southpaw has been conveniently asked to remain on the sidelines.
2. Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj (Photo by Paul Kane/Getty Images)
Mohammed Siraj has been a workhorse for the Indian team in the past few years. His name has become synonymous with India's pace attack, and the Hyderabad-born has often played a vital part with the ball alongside Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami. His fate of being an all-format player for the Indian team has slowly started fading, though.
With Shami's exclusion and Bumrah's injury concerns, Siraj has himself borne a lot of workload upon himself, especially in the Test format. Keeping the same in mind, the ace pacer has been advised to manage his availability for the team. While he did feature in the Test against Afghanistan, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had explained that Siraj won't be featuring excessively in other formats to keep himself fresh and ready for more important challenges.
1. Ravindra Jadeja
Ravindra Jadeja (Photo by Surjeet Yadav/MB Media/Getty Images)
A senior all-rounder like Ravindra Jadeja , if continued to be kept out of the squad, does not put the team in a great light. While the selectors have said that an experienced player like Jadeja can always be brought in the team and they want to test fresh faces, lack of match time and directly being put under the pump isn't something every player can shine in.
Jadeja last played an ODI against New Zealand in January 2026. Since 2025, the star cricketer has scored runs at an average of 53.00 for the Men in Blue while also picking 12 wickets. He might not have been as impressive as ever, but he has the clutch factor in him, which has won matches for the team time and again. Continued ignorance may lead to a fading out of Jadeja, eventually ending in a disrespectful exit.

📢'They say he is being played because of the Gujarat lobby' - Aakash Chopra praises Prasidh Krishna after five-for in 3rd ODI vs AFG
Prasidh Krishna (Source: BCCI)
Aakash Chopra lavished praise on Prasidh Krishna after the 30-year-old picked up his maiden five-for in ODI cricket on Saturday, June 20. The right-arm seamer took the new ball at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and made the Afghanistan batters dance to his tunes.
Chopra said that Krishna silenced his critics who had even said that he gets picked in the side because he plays for the Gujarat Titans, the franchise led by Indian captain Shubman Gill.
"Prasidh Krishna was given the new ball against Australia in Indore in 2023. He had taken wickets with the new ball there as well. However, he didn't get the new ball at all after that. He didn't get a chance to play. We were checking who has taken the most wickets for India in their first series," Chopra said in a video on his YouTube channel.
"Prasidh Krishna's name was there in that list as well. He had taken six wickets in his first series, and Gurnoor Brar took seven this time. However, how many chances has he got after that? Very few. He has been trolled many times as to why Prasidh is played. They say he is being played because of the Gujarat lobby. By the way, he is not from Gujarat. He is from Karnataka," he added.
"We had said long ago that this Krishna would become Prasidh" - Aakash Chopra on Prasidh Krishna's five-wicket haul
Chopra highlighted how Krishna managed to get the ball to swing and induce outside edges. The former India opener said that it isn't easy to pick up five-wicket hauls in white-ball cricket.
"We had said long ago that this Krishna would become Prasidh, and he is bowling well. He bowled full, got the ball to swing, and induced outside edges. He was brilliant. It's not easy to take a five-wicket haul in white-ball cricket, and he did that. The first two overs were maidens," he said.
Chopra mentioned that Krishna has always extracted extra bounce thanks to his tall frame but on Saturday, he became even more lethal because he was able to move the ball sideways.
"Height, pace, extra bounce, and sideways movement. I think sideways movement was the differentiator because he has always had height and bounce. The ability to bowl full, get the ball to swing a little, and to deliver on the seam with backspin, those things stood out. It was an important series for him," Chopra observed.
After dismissing Afghanistan for 218, India romped home in 28 overs with nine wickets to spare. Krishna won the Player of the Match award after finishing with figures of 5/23 in 8.2 overs. India whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0 in a one-sided series.

The future of Hardik Pandya at Mumbai Indians has become one of the biggest talking points in the IPL ecosystem. Despite leading the franchise over the last two seasons, speculation surrounding his long-term future continues to grow, with several reports and social media discussions linking the star all-rounder with a potential move ahead of the next edition of the tournament.

Here are three IPL teams where Hardik Pandya could be a perfect fit:
3. Chennai Super Kings

Hardik Pandya’s brief interaction with CSK’s CEO Kasi Viswanathan after MI’s loss in IPL 2026 has already created a stir on social media regarding his possible switch to the Chennai-based franchise. Hardik Pandya brings in immense value as an all-rounder, especially with the bat. He is a rare commodity in Indian cricket and also one of the most marketable faces.
The five-time champions have been filling a void in their lower order after the departure of Ravindra Jadeja, and with MS Dhoni nearing his end as a player, Hardik remains a perfect choice. He also brings in a possible captaincy option, with Ruturaj Gaikwad failing to impress. If this trade gets done, Pandya will join the elusive list of players to play for both Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings .
2. Rajasthan Royals
Rajasthan Royals Team (Source: IPL)
Rajasthan Royals are currently the most exciting team to watch in IPL after the emergence of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The franchise also had a great run in IPL 2026, where they reached the playoffs under the captaincy of Riyan Parag. Despite adding Ravindra Jadeja ’s services in their arsenal, they struggled to find any kind of rhythm in the middle-order throughout the season. Shimron Hetmyer was a big disappointment in the 2026 season, where he only scored 78 runs in eight matches.
If RR acquires Hardik Pandya from MI, he can solve many of their problems. Along with Jadeja, he will form a deadly all-round duo, giving the team immense balance. He can also be a potential captaincy candidate. The rumours of possible trade between RR and MI for Pandya and Yashasvi Jaiswal has certainly added fuel to the fire.
1. Kolkata Knight Riders

The best destination for Hardik Pandya is three-time IPL champions Kolkata Knight Riders. It benefits both the parties, as KKR desperately need a solid Indian face to lead the franchise for a longer period of time, whereas Pandya will be looking for a franchise where he can lead. After Gautam Gambhir’s departure, KKR has struggled to maintain consistency in the IPL despite winning the competition in 2024.
With Ajinkya Rahane all set to be removed as captain ahead of the next season, KKR are in search for a possible captaincy candidate. This is where Hardik Pandya fits in perfectly. He can be the captain of the franchise, and Eden Gardens also fits his batting style perfectly.

Shubman Gill won his first ODI series as captain of the Indian team after the Men in Blue whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0 on Saturday, June 20. Former India batter Manoj Tiwary believes that he isn't a 'born leader' but backed him to improve with experience.
After Shubman replaced Rohit Sharma as the captain of the ODI team, India lost a three-match series to Australia 1-2 in October 2025. Earlier this year, New Zealand defeated India by a same margin. However, Shubman has finally tasted success as a skipper in the 50-over format, with the Asian giants defeating Afghanistan comprehensively in the recently-concluded series.
"This series went well for him as captain. The more series he captains, the better he will get. He is not a 'born leader' yet, but he will learn. Everything comes naturally to a born leader, and then there is someone like Shubman Gill who learns with time, and that is why it is important for Rohit and Virat, and even KL to stay in the team and advise him. The mistakes that they made during their captaincy, they will not let him repeat it," Tiwary said on Cricbuzz.
"Also, when you have so many good players, the pressure of captaincy reduces a bit. When you have the number one pacer and spinner, you just have to bring them on, and they will do their job. So, this is the luxury you have in Team India, because we have top, top players. Bring any bowler at any point of time, they will deliver," he added.
Shubman didn't just lead the team well, but he also played a key role with the bat. The Punjab batter finished with 238 runs in two innings at an average of 238 and a strike rate of 135.23. He was the highest run-getter by a distance and went on to win the Player of the Series award. His next test will be a tough one, as India will play three ODIs against England in the United Kingdom next month.

MI New York veteran Kieron Pollard rolled back the years with a sensational unbeaten century against Washington Freedom in Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026, but his heroic effort ultimately came in a losing cause at the Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas on June 21.
While Pollard’s hundred grabbed headlines, one particular moment during the chase sparked memories of one of cricket’s most famous on-field confrontations. In the ninth over, Washington Freedom pacer Asif Mehmood delivered a ball that Pollard struck straight back towards him. Mehmood collected the ball and appeared to gesture as if he would throw it at the batter. In response, Pollard instinctively raised his bat before the bowler decided against taking any further action.
The incident immediately reminded fans of Pollard’s memorable face-off with Mitchell Starc during the Indian Premier League several years ago. In that famous encounter, tensions flared after Starc threw the ball towards Pollard, who reacted by lifting his bat in a dramatic standoff. The similarity of the latest incident quickly became a talking point among cricket fans on social media.

As for the match itself, Washington Freedom produced a batting masterclass after being put in to bat. Opening batter Mitchell Owen was the star of the show, smashing a remarkable 155 runs off just 68 deliveries. The Australian batter tore into the MI New York bowling attack, striking 11 boundaries and 13 sixes at a stunning strike rate of 227.94.
Owen’s explosive innings powered Washington Freedom to a mammoth total of 245/5 in their allotted 20 overs. MI New York’s bowlers struggled to contain the run flow, although five different bowlers managed to pick up a wicket each.
In reply, MI New York needed a strong start but found themselves under pressure against a disciplined Freedom bowling attack. Pollard, however, kept his side in the hunt with a vintage display of power-hitting. The former West Indies captain remained unbeaten on exactly 100 from 56 balls, hitting 11 fours and four sixes while maintaining a strike rate of 178.57.
Despite Pollard’s brilliance, MI New York fell short of the daunting target, finishing on 215/6 in their 20 overs and losing by 30 runs. Washington Freedom skipper Glenn Maxwell also made a valuable contribution with the ball, returning figures of 2/37 from his four-over spell to help secure an important victory for his side.
