How did the 3rd ODI go between India and Afghanistan? โ€” Review, Turning Points & more

India registered a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the third and final ODI at MA Chidambaram Stadium on June 20, completing a 3-0 whitewash in the three-match series.

After winning the toss, Afghanistan elected to bat first and posted 218 runs on the board. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi led the resistance with a superb 102, while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed a valuable 50. For India, Prasidh Krishna starred with the ball, claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul to restrict the visitors.

In reply, India chased down the target comfortably, reaching 224/1 in just 28.4 overs. Yashasvi Jaiswal anchored the innings with an unbeaten century, while Rohit Sharma played an aggressive knock of 79 runs.

Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was the standout performer with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 110 off 86 balls. His match-winning innings featured 14 fours and three sixes and came at an impressive strike rate of 127.90. Jaiswal laid the foundation for India's comfortable chase by sharing a 170-run opening partnership with Rohit Sharma in 139 balls. After Rohit's dismissal, he remained unbeaten and added a further 54 runs for the second wicket with Shreyas Iyer in just 35 balls, guiding India to victory and completing the 3-0 series sweep over Afghanistan.

Right-arm pacer Prasidh Krishna was the standout bowler of the match, producing a superb spell of 5/23 in 8.2 overs, including two maiden overs. His incisive bowling dismantled the Afghanistan batting lineup as he accounted for the wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, and Darwish Rasooli.

Records Broken and Major Milestones Achieved

The series marked the first ODI series victory for Shubman Gill as India's captain.

The 170-run opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal is the fourth-highest opening stand against Afghanistan in ODI cricket.

Rohit Sharma registered his 95th score of 50 or more in ODIs, the third-most by an Indian batter.

Rohit was involved in his 71st century partnership in ODIs, the fourth-highest tally in the format.

India scored 23 runs in the first over of their innings, their highest-ever total in the opening over of an ODI innings.

Prasidh Krishna became only the third Indian bowler to dismiss each of the opposition's top five batters in an ODI innings.

Prasidh's figures of 5/23 are now the best bowling figures by any bowler in an ODI at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

Hashmatullah Shahidi took 4,644 days from his ODI debut in 2013 to score his maiden ODI century, the fourth-longest gap between debut and first ODI hundred.

Shahidi's 102 off 126 balls is the second-slowest ODI century for Afghanistan in terms of balls faced.

Azmatullah Omarzai reached 50 ODI sixes in just 36 innings, joint-third fastest in ODI history.

Rohit Sharma became only the fourth Indian fielder to be involved in the first three dismissals of an ODI innings.

Rohit's three catches off the bowling of Prasidh Krishna made him only the third Indian fielder to take three catches off the same bowler in an ODI innings.

Prasidh Krishna became the seventh Indian bowler to t

Who won the Player of the Match?

Prasidh Krishna was named Player of the Match for his outstanding bowling performance in the third ODI against Afghanistan. The right-arm pacer produced a match-winning spell of 5/23 in 8.2 overs, including two maidens, completely dominating the Afghanistan batting lineup.

Shubman Gill was named Player of the Series for his outstanding batting performances throughout the ODI series against Afghanistan. The Indian captain amassed 238 runs in just two innings at an impressive strike rate of 135.23. Gill's prolific run-scoring included 33 fours and four sixes, underlining his dominance at the top of the order.

The Seattle Orcas wicketkeeper-batter has amassed 182 runs in just two matches, maintaining an impressive strike rate of 183.84. His ability to score quickly during the powerplay and keep the scoreboard moving makes him a major threat, especially on the batting-friendly surface.

Bangladesh Women produced a superb all-round performance to register a 23-run victory over Pakistan Women in Match No. 15 of the Womenโ€™s T20 World Cup 2026 at The Rose Bowl, Southampton, on June 20.

After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh Women posted 123/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Shorna Akter anchored the innings with an unbeaten 39 runs, while Pakistan captain Fatima Sana was the standout bowler for her side, claiming two wickets.

In reply, Pakistan Women struggled to build momentum and were restricted to 100/8 in 20 overs. โ€˜It is my dream toโ€ฆโ€™ - Ravi Bishnoi reveals his ultimate target after T20 World Cup 2026 snub (Source : IPL/X)

India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has made it clear that he is determined to establish himself as a permanent member of the national side after enduring a stop-start international career. Despite once being ranked the No. 1 T20I bowler in the ICC rankings, Bishnoi has struggled to nail down a regular spot in Indiaโ€™s playing XI and has missed out on selection for the last three T20 World Cups.

The 25-year-old spinner from Jodhpur has now returned to the setup following another World Cup cycle and is hoping for a more consistent run with the team. Notably, Bishnoi has been preferred over Kuldeep Yadav in Indiaโ€™s squads for the upcoming Ireland tour, England series, and the Asian Games.

With Varun Chakaravarthy being the only other specialist spinner in the squad, Bishnoi is expected to play a key role alongside all-round spin options Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. Bishnoi admitted that he wants to move away from being labelled as a player who constantly fights his way back into the team and instead become a regular fixture in Indiaโ€™s plans.

โ€œHonestly, all my energies will be on ensuring that I am here to stay as a permanent member of the side. I donโ€™t want to known as someone who keeps making comebacks,โ€ he was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.

Bishnoi last represented India in January before missing out on selection for the T20 World Cup. While the exclusion was disappointing, the leg-spinner chose to focus on improving his game under the guidance of his coach Shahrukh rather than dwell on the setback.

The Rajasthan-born cricketer acknowledged that representing India at a World Cup remains one of his biggest ambitions and is eager to ensure he does not miss out on the next edition scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand in 2028.

โ€œIt is everyoneโ€™s dream to play in the World Cup. To win it. It is my dream too. Even though I have missed the World Cups, I have more opportunities. So I will try not to miss this time. I should make it count.

โ€œAnd when you miss, it is not like suddenly someone is playing in my place. But India won the World Cup. Whoever plays in my place, they did really well,โ€ he concluded.

With India set to experiment with fresh combinations in the new T20 cycle, Bishnoi will be eager to seize his opportunity and cement his place as the teamโ€™s frontline spinner ahead of the 2028 showpiece event.

How did Match 16 of the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 go between England Women and Scotland Women?

England Women (ENG W) have registered their third consecutive win of the ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 , nearly confirming a spot for the semi-finals already by defeating Scotland Women (SCO W) by a 38-run margin on Saturday, June 20, at Headingley in Leeds. The game had started with the Scottish side electing to field first after winning the toss.

England had a dreadful start, losing Amy Jones on the first ball of the match. However, there were no further hiccups till the end of the powerplay. The moment the field restrictions were lifted, Danni Wyatt-Hodge also made her way back to the pavillion. Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey batted brilliantly through the middle overs, while Freya Kemp's and Dani Gibson's cameos at the end took the total to 200 for 5.

The run chase got underway with a decent start by the Scottish openers. However, all the hosts needed was a stroke of luck to pull things back in their favour. Once the first breakthrough came in the fourth over, none of them could really form a partnership to steer through to the target. Valiant efforts from the Scotts were not enough, as they eventually fell short by 38 runs despite having a few wickets in hand.

Best Batting Performance of the Match: Sophia Dunkley

A wicket on the first ball of the innings called Sophia Dunkley to the crease, and it seemed she came well set from the dugout itself. With eight boundaries and a six during her entertaining stay at the crease, Dunkley went on to accumulate 57 runs off just 37 deliveries. Her partnership with Capsey (40 off 25) was extremely crucial in the Englishwomen posting a huge total. The platform set by Dunkley also allowed Freya Kemp (39* off 16) and Dani Gibson (30* off 11) to play with an attacking mindset towards the end.

Best Bowling Performance of the Match: Sophie Ecclestone

It has almost become a routine for Sophie Ecclestone to be at the top of her game every time she steps onto the field. Her four-over spell against Scotland resulted in a couple of significant breakthroughs in the form of skipper Kathryn Bryce, which came in the very first over she bowled. Later on, she also accounted for the fall of Darcey Carter, who was looking dangerous and was well set before departing for 29 off 23.

Records Broken and Major Milestones Achieved

47-run partnership between Gordon and Pippa Sproul in today's match was the highest for the seventh wicket for Scotland in WT20Is. They went past Chatterji's and Rachel Slater's 44.

A total of 362 runs were scored in today's match (200 by England and 162 by Scotland), which is the highest match aggregate for England and Scotland in a WT20I encounter.

For her brilliant performance with the bat at number three, Sophia Dunkley was named the Player of the Match in the Saturday fixture. Her knock has almost confirmed a semi-finale berth for the English side, as they remain unbeaten with only two more games to go in their group-stage campaign of the global competition.

When is the next match?

The next clash in the marquee T20 event will see Sri Lanka and the West Indies face off at the County Ground in Bristol. This clash will be followed by a thriller between India and South Africa at Old Trafford. Scotland will play their next game against New Zealand on Tuesday, while England have their next lined up against the Caribbeans on June 24.

Star cricketer Ben Stokes has been in the news of late after a nightclub altercation, which has seen him miss the second Test against New Zealand at the Oval.

Stokes, who has been dropped from the England team after the incident, is currently in action for Durham against Northamptonshire at Chester-Le-Street in the 2026 County Championship Division Two. In a video that has emerged on X (formerly Twitter) from the game, Stokes can be seen jogging in to bowl from the boundary rope before accelerating into his run-up around the 30-yard mark.

โ€” Hector Vickers (@HectorVick43502) June 20, 2026

Playing for Durham, the star cricketer finished the first innings with figures of 1 for 80 from 25 overs, as Northants put on a mammoth 450, courtesy of Ricardo Vasconcelos' mammoth 187.

Meanwhile, in international cricket, the Three Lions are having a horrible time against New Zealand in the Oval Test, needing a mammoth 463-run target to win the match. However, at the end of the fourth day's play, they have already lost half the side with interim skipper Joe Root still batting at the crease. They need 281 more runs on the final day with five more wickets to go on the final day.

For the unversed, Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were involved in an altercation at a nightclub after England's win in the first Test. The pair also broke the curfew imposed on the team after several drinking-related incidents during the 4-1 loss to Australia in the Ashes in late 2025 as well. The repetition of the ill behaviour led to both being dropped from the squad.

The duo has been summoned by the ECB's Cricket Regulator, and an internal investigation is being conducted into their actions, with the results of both rulings expected on or before Sunday, June 21.

While an official confirmation on the rulings has not yet been made, it has been reported that Stokes could return as the captain of the side for the third Test at Trent Bridge, with attitudes within the England management having softened.

Australia star Ellyse Perry etched her name into the record books on Saturday, becoming the first cricketer in history, across both men's and women's cricket, to feature in 50 T20 World Cup matches. The milestone came after Perry was named in Australia's playing XI for their ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 clash against the Netherlands at the Rose Bowl in Hampshire.

One of the most decorated cricketers of her generation, Perry made her T20I debut for Australia in 2008 and has represented the team in every Women's T20 World Cup since the tournament's inaugural edition in 2009. Her first appearance in the global event came against New Zealand in Taunton.

Over the years, the 35-year-old has played a pivotal role in Australia's dominance in the shortest format, winning six Women's T20 World Cup titles. The achievement places her among the most successful players in the history of the competition.

Reflecting on the landmark, Perry expressed gratitude for her long journey with the national side.

"It's always just incredibly awesome to be a part of a World Cup, to be a part of an Australian team," Perry told Cricket Australia.

"It's a special team to play cricket for. I feel incredibly fortunate to have done it for a period of time, and I think certainly over the journey of T20 World Cups and the experience that we've had at every single one of them, they've all been unique and different. I can't believe I've played 50,โ€ she continued.

Perry has remained an important member of the Australian side in the ongoing tournament. She featured in all three of Australia's matches heading into the Netherlands fixture and made significant contributions in the opening games.

The veteran all-rounder scored 36 runs against South Africa in Australia's tournament opener before making useful contributions with both bat and ball against Bangladesh. Ahead of her 50th T20 World Cup appearance, Perry had accumulated 558 runs and claimed 42 wickets in the tournament, underlining her impact as one of the game's premier all-rounders.

Australia have played 52 Women's T20 World Cup matches overall, including the contest against the Netherlands. Perry's only absences came during the semi-final and final of the 2020 edition after she suffered a hamstring injury. The Australian veteran has been part of 40 wins from her previous 49 Women's T20 World Cup appearances, further highlighting her remarkable record on the biggest stage.

Former Australia captain Alyssa Healy and New Zealand stalwart Suzie Bates sit next on the list with 42 appearances each. Among active players, India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and New Zealand captain Sophie Devine have also crossed the 40-match mark in Women's T20 World Cups.

In men's T20 World Cup cricket, former India captain Rohit Sharma holds the record for the most appearances with 47 matches. Perry had drawn level with that tally at the start of the 2026 edition before surpassing it with her latest appearance.

'Baby monster' Vaibhav Sooryavanshi brandished his blade so hard in the final of the tri-series against Sri Lanka A that India A's projected score displayed an unimaginable 950 after four overs. With the help of Sooryavanshi's unworldly attack against the Lankan side at the Rangiri International Cricket Stadium, Dambulla, India A got the perfect start in the all-important clash.

With his lightning-fast knock in the middle, Sooryavanshi took just 11 balls to complete his half-century, which eventually also became the fastest fifty in List-A cricket. After four overs into the one-day contest, Sooryavanshi had faced 12 balls, scoring 54 already, while his partner Priyansh Arya managed 'only' 20, having faced equinumerous deliveries, as the total read 76-0 without any loss of wicket.

Sooryavanshi continued his assault and kept the Lankan bowlers on their toes before perishing on 94 off 29 deliveries. Had the 29th delivery that the 15-year-old faced gone for a six, Sooryavanshi would have registered the joint-fastest century in 50-over cricket. It, unfortunately, wasn't meant to be for the Bihar-born batter, though, as he handed a simple catch to the mid-off fielder in the ninth over off Sahan Arachchige.

Sooryavanshi's thunderous knock included ten fours and eight sixes, meaning that 88 off his 94 runs came only in boundaries.

There is a famous saying in cricket: "Let the bat do the talking." And that is exactly what India's batting prodigy, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi , did against Sri Lanka A in the final of the Tri-Nation A Series 2026.

After finding himself at the centre of attention following a heated altercation during an earlier meeting between the two sides, the teenage sensation responded in the best possible manner. After being invited to bat first in this crucial encounter, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi just dismantled the Lankan bowling line-up single-handedly with a breathtaking display of power-hitting as he smashed a fastest-ever half-century in List-A cricket.

Opening the batting with Priyansh Arya, the 15-year-old sensation was in full flow, scoring boundaries at will. During the fourth over of India Aโ€™s innings, Vaibhav smashed a thumping six over long-on to complete his half century in just 11 balls, reaching the landmark at a strike rate of 454.55.

He broke the long-standing record of Sri Lankan batter Kaushalya Weeraratne, who had completed his half century in 12 balls in 2005. Vaibhav did not stop there, as he continued his assault on the Sri Lanka A bowlers, smashing 94 runs in just 29 balls before getting dismissed by Sahan Arachchige in the ninth over. His innings included 10 fours and eight staggering sixes.

Vaibhav had a golden chance to create yet another world record in List A cricket, of becoming the joint-fastest centurion in the format. That record is currently held by Jake Fraser-McGurk , who reached the milestone in just 29 balls for South Australia against Tasmania in 2023. Opener Priyansh Arya too, played a handy knock of 39 runs in 29 balls.
