📢IND vs AFG: The reason behind India's unusual 5/0 start while chasing

IND vs AFG: The reason behind India's unusual 5/0 start while chasing (Source:jioStar)

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi inadvertently cost his side five crucial runs during the third ODI against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai after repeatedly running on the protected area of the pitch.

The incident occurred during the 40th over of Afghanistan’s innings. Shahidi, who was batting brilliantly and went on to score his maiden ODI century, had already been warned multiple times by the on-field umpires for running in the danger area of the pitch. Despite the warnings, he once again ran through the protected zone while completing a single.

As a result, on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Rohan Pandit penalised Afghanistan under the Laws of Cricket. The single taken by Shahidi was disallowed, and five penalty runs were awarded to India. The decision proved costly for Afghanistan as they looked to post a competitive total against a strong Indian bowling attack.

According to Law 41.14 of the MCC Laws of Cricket, batters are prohibited from running on the protected area of the pitch, a 5-foot by 2-foot strip located in the centre of the wicket. The law is designed to prevent damage to the surface, which could unfairly affect the contest between bat and ball.

For a first offence, the batting side receives an official warning. Any subsequent infringement by either batter results in a five-run penalty being awarded to the fielding side. Additionally, any runs completed on that delivery are cancelled.

Despite the setback, Shahidi played a captain’s knock and remained the standout performer for Afghanistan. He scored a well-compiled 102, while Azmatullah Omarzai contributed 50 runs. Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 218 in 44.2 overs. India’s bowling attack was led by Prasidh Krishna, who delivered a match-winning spell of 5/23 in 8.2 overs.

The Men in Blue had already secured the three-match ODI series with victories in the first two games. Indian captain Shubman Gill played a pivotal role in those wins, scoring a half-century in the opening ODI before following it up with a commanding 150 in the second match to help India take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Former Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik established himself as one of the finest wicketkeepers in the country during his playing days. Post-retirement, he has been serving as a coach and as a commentator as well, offering valuable insights and helping develop teams.

In a recent video shared by Sky Sports during the second Test between England and New Zealand at the Oval, Karthik, donning a London Spirit jersey, was shown explaining the biomechanics and techniques of wicketkeeping. This comes after England debutant James Rew has been a point of discussion over his keeping in the innings.

The erstwhile stumper-batter was seen undertaking wicketkeeping drills with broadcaster Ian Ward and was explaining the techniques and stances while wicketkeeping.

"Always have your head in line with your toes or probably slightly ahead. Not too far out or not too far behind. One of the reasons, and I think James Rew should be working on, is at times his head, his weight is behind. As a wicketkeeper, you almost need to be like a boxer in the balls of your feet. That will give you the best chance to move in a lateral way," Karthik explained.

In keeping, it's not funky, fancy drills. It's about easy drills, but you're doing it repetitively. Keeping is all about repetition. The more you practise, the better you get," he added.

Karthik will be with the London Spirit in the 2026 Men's Hundred as their batting coach and mentor. He joins head coach Andy Flower, with the pair having seen a successful stint with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, lifting their elusive maiden title and helping them successfully defend it in the following season.

For England , Rew is making his debut after wicketkeeper Jamie Smith pulled out to attend the birth of his second child. The highly rated prospect from Somerset has had an ordinary showing behind the stumps and scored 24 in the first innings, getting out to a short ball from Will O'Rourke.

India leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi has made it clear that he is determined to establish himself as a permanent member of the national side after enduring a stop-start international career. Despite once being ranked the No. 1 T20I bowler in the ICC rankings, Bishnoi has struggled to nail down a regular spot in India’s playing XI and has missed out on selection for the last three T20 World Cups.

The 25-year-old spinner from Jodhpur has now returned to the setup following another World Cup cycle and is hoping for a more consistent run with the team. Notably, Bishnoi has been preferred over Kuldeep Yadav in India’s squads for the upcoming Ireland tour, England series, and the Asian Games.

With Varun Chakaravarthy being the only other specialist spinner in the squad, Bishnoi is expected to play a key role alongside all-round spin options Axar Patel and Washington Sundar. Bishnoi admitted that he wants to move away from being labelled as a player who constantly fights his way back into the team and instead become a regular fixture in India’s plans.

“Honestly, all my energies will be on ensuring that I am here to stay as a permanent member of the side. I don’t want to known as someone who keeps making comebacks,” he was quoted as saying by NDTV Sports.

Bishnoi last represented India in January before missing out on selection for the T20 World Cup. While the exclusion was disappointing, the leg-spinner chose to focus on improving his game under the guidance of his coach Shahrukh rather than dwell on the setback.

The Rajasthan-born cricketer acknowledged that representing India at a World Cup remains one of his biggest ambitions and is eager to ensure he does not miss out on the next edition scheduled to be held in Australia and New Zealand in 2028.

“It is everyone’s dream to play in the World Cup. To win it. It is my dream too. Even though I have missed the World Cups, I have more opportunities. So I will try not to miss this time. I should make it count.

“And when you miss, it is not like suddenly someone is playing in my place. But India won the World Cup. Whoever plays in my place, they did really well,” he concluded.

With India set to experiment with fresh combinations in the new T20 cycle, Bishnoi will be eager to seize his opportunity and cement his place as the team’s frontline spinner ahead of the 2028 showpiece event.
