The term memetics was coined by biologist Richard Dawkins in 'The Selfish Gene' (1976) as an analogy to genetics. Just as genes replicate in biology, "memes" are units of cultural information, ideas, symbols, phrases, or images, that spread through minds like viruses.
The battle for hearts and minds is online.
