Attention Mains 2020 candidates!
Some tips and advices from Dr. Prasanna Lodh
Dr Prasanna Lodh(AIR 524) has done his MBBS from Grant Medical College and Sir JJ Group of Hospitals, one of the top medical colleges in India. Being a brilliant student, he spent two years in the Casualties ward which is rarely assigned to recent graduates. His journey is truly inspirational. On our request, he has shared his tips for ConvertIAS students
------------------------------
To Convert IAS team,
You are doing a great job by helping the civil services aspirants. Answer writing is one of the most crucial but tricky aspects of the process. My advice to fellow aspirants is:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Don't violate the word limit or else penalty could be imposed in the final examination.
3. Write only relevant information, strictly according to demands of the question.
4. Innovative diagrams are appreciated.
5. Don't let your optional overshadow your general studies answers. Moderator of the paper will appreciate only general content, so don't express your optional knowledge too much in your GS or Essay papers. A little bit of relevant content is okay but too much optional content may backfire. That's why aspirants get less marks even if they have written essays or GS answers very nicely. Just remember, write simple and relevant data only.
6. Stay away from negative thoughts. I cleared my Mains in my first attempt itself. Many people were concerned about my age, marriage, huge study gap after graduation, rural background, etc. but I never backed down. I was focused and followed my dreams and my intuitions. So don't focus too much on the multiple mains or interview examples floating around you, everyone has different journey. Following in the footsteps of others won't help.
Make your first mains attempt the best! Make your own journey.
Best wishes.

Today's practice question from current affairs:
1.Suppose the Government of India is thinking of constructing a dam in a mountain valley bond by forests and inhabited by ethnic communities. What rational policy should it resort to in dealing with unforeseen contingencies (150 w,10m)
2. Explain the process of resolving ethical dilemmas in Public Administration. (150 w, 10m)
3. It is a State where prohibition is in force. You are recently appointed as the Superintendent of Police of a district notorious for illicit distillation of liquor. The illicit liquor leads to many death, reported and unreported, and causes a major problem for the district authorities.
The approach till now had been to view it as a law and order problem and tackle it accordingly. Raids, arrest, police cases, and criminal trials – all these had only limited impact. The problem remains as serious as ever.
Your inspections show that the parts of the district where the distillation flourishes are economically, industrially and educationally backward. Agriculture is badly affected by poor irrigation facilities. Frequent clashes among communities gave boost to illicit distillation. No major initiatives had taken place in the past either from the government’s side or from social organizations to improve the lot of the people.
Which new approach will you adopt to bring the problem under control? (250 w,15m)
