ICTP Associates Seminars are part personal, part scientific, with speakers sharing their career trajectory and experiences, then introducing their research field and work.
In this seminar, Prof. Reza Ejtehadi from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, will discuss being a scientist in Iran, and work on active matter in his group in Iran.
Abstract
As it is going to be the custom in this series of seminars, in the first part I will present a picture of the life of a scientist in Iran to see how being active under these circumstances can differ from the general image of the usual activity. n the second part I will give an overview of the search activities of my group in Iran. We focus on soft and biological matters and in the last decade we have also become interested in active particles, active polymers and active matters.
On-site and online: https://ictp.global/events/215341

#PhD vacancy: Migration Narratives in Digital Societies
How do online migration debates become politically consequential?
Migration has long been central to political contestation, but digital platforms have transformed how it is discussed. Online debates do not revolve around facts alone. They unfold through rapidly circulating narratives that combine language, images, personal stories, and emotional appeals.
➡️ We are looking for a PhD candidate with strong quantitative research skills. You will combine multimodal social media analysis with survey experiments and data-donation methods, drawing on sociology, political science, computational social science and data science.

Luis Bettencourt on the Universal Properties of Self-Organizing Cities
People who live in large cities produce more patents per person than those who live in small towns. They also walk faster down the street, and use less infrastructure per person. Indeed, the relationships between these quantities and city population obey power laws with apparently universal exponents, reminiscent of scaling laws is biological organisms? Luis Bettencourt argues that they can be explained in similar ways, using ideas from complex systems and network theory.

Jitendra Malik challenges the "bitter lesson" doctrine, arguing that simple scaling is insufficient for true artificial intelligence. By contrasting passive surface data with active, hard-earned deep data, this talk explores the necessity of curiosity-driven exploration and physical embodiment in creating systems that move beyond mere mimicry to genuine understanding of our world.
