Finally, our “peace programme” must explain that the imperialist Powers and the imperialist bourgeoisie cannot grant a democratic peace. Such a peace must be sought and fought for, not in the past, not in a reactionary utopia of a non-imperialist capitalism, nor in a league of equal nations under capitalism, but in the future, in the socialist revolution of the proletariat. Not a single fundamental democratic demand can be achieved to any considerable extent, or any degree of permanency, in the advanced imperialist states, except by revolutionary battles under the banner of socialism.
Whoever promises the nations a “democratic” peace without at the same time preaching the socialist revolution, or while repudiating the struggle for it—the struggle which must be carried on now, during the war—is deceiving the proletariat.

Foreign powers continue carving out spheres of influence in Syria two months after the Assad administration‘s collapse. Türkiye, likely the biggest beneficiary, now plans to establish two new military bases in the country while Israel expands its presence in occupied territories in the south.
With the Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)-led administration in Damascus strengthening ties with Türkiye, Ankara’s influence in Syria is expanding rapidly. Meanwhile, the US is drafting plans to withdraw all its troops from the country, raising questions about the balance of power in the region.
As foreign actors reposition themselves, the future of Syria remains uncertain. Will Türkiye consolidate control over key territories? How will Israel or other regional and global powers respond? The shifting landscape signals a new chapter in Syria’s long-running conflict.

On this day, 16 February 1943, US-born translator, writer and German anti-Nazi resistance activist Mildred Fish-Harnack was beheaded in Berlin: the only US woman to be executed on dictator Adolf Hitler's personal orders.
Part of what the Nazis dubbed the "Red Orchestra" of socialist anti-fascist underground activists, she was tried and sentenced to hard labour, but then retried on Hitler's direction and sentenced to death.
Fish-Harnack and her group assisted Jews and forced labourers, recruited other resistance activists, distributed anti-fascist propaganda and funnelled valuable German intelligence to the US, and the Soviet Union.
After the war, the US government investigated her case and determined that her execution was justified.
Two of the Nazi war criminals who were directly involved in Fish-Harnack's prosecution, torture and death were subsequently recruited by UK and US intelligence services, including Manfred Roeder, who was due to be indicted in Nuremberg until he was rescued by US security services and given a secret identity.
Her lead torturer meanwhile, Horst Kopkow, was recruited by Britain's MI6, who faked his death, gave him a new identity, and made him the manager of a factory in west Germany.

Huey P. Newton’s birthday today falls in Black History Month, and at a time when the extreme right is taking power around the world. Now is as critical a time as ever to reflect on how Newton recognized that the fight against racism, capitalism, and imperialism are intertwined.

But is there such a thing as communist ethics? Is there such a thing as communist morality? Of course, there is. It is often suggested that we have no ethics of our own; very often the bourgeoisie accuse us Communists of rejecting all morality. This is a method of confusing the issue, of throwing dust in the eyes of the workers and peasants.
In what sense do we reject ethics, reject morality?
In the sense given to it by the bourgeoisie, who based ethics on God's commandments. On this point we, of course, say that we do not believe in God, and that we know perfectly well that the clergy, the landowners and the bourgeoisie invoked the name of God so as to further their own interests as exploiters. Or, instead of basing ethics on the commandments of morality, on the commandments of God, they based it on idealist or semi-idealist phrases, which always amounted to something very similar to God's commandments.
We reject any morality based on extra-human and extra-class concepts.

We say that this is deception, dupery, stultification of the workers and peasants in the interests of the landowners and capitalists.
We say that our morality is entirely subordinated to the interests of the proletariat's class struggle. Our morality stems from the interests of the class struggle of the proletariat.
The old society was based on the oppression of all the workers and peasants by the landowners and capitalists. We had to destroy all that, and overthrow them but to do that we had to create unity. That is something that God cannot create.

Certain bourgeois writers (now joined by Karl Kautsky, who has completely abandoned the Marxist position he had held, for example, in 1909) have expressed the opinion that international cartels, being one of the most striking expressions of the internationalisation of capital, give the hope of peace among nations under capitalism. Theoretically, this opinion is absolutely absurd, while in practice it is sophistry and a dishonest defence of the worst opportunism.

On this day, 19 February 1954 the Brazilian footballing legend, doctor and dictatorship-resistor Sócrates was born. Playing for Corinthians, a historically working class team, Sócrates co-founded the Corinthians Democracy movement opposing the brutal US-backed dictatorship. In 1982 they won the state championship with "Democracia" emblazoned on their shirts. When he moved to Italy and was asked which Italian he respected the most, Mazzola or Rivera (football players of Inter and AC Milan, respectively), he responded: "I don't know them. I'm here to read Gramsci in original language and to study the history of the workers' movement" (referring to Italian Marxist Antonio Gramsci).

Between capitalist and communist society there lies the period of the revolutionary transformation of the one into the other. Corresponding to this is also a political transition period in which the state can be nothing but the revolutionary dictatorship of the proletariat.

Argentinian President Milei’s government sent police to repress the elderly protesting pension cuts yesterday in Buenos Aires. Police used pepper spray and baton charges against the retirees, resulting in several injured protesters.
The mobilizations have been ongoing for months and arose in response to a freeze on the state pension, worth just $190 per month. It continues to lose value amid soaring inflation. Other demands include the restoration of access to subsidized medicine for seniors, which has also been removed under Milei’s ultra-neoliberal government.

The economic oppression of the workers inevitably calls forth and engenders every kind of political oppression and social humiliation, the coarsening and darkening of the spiritual and moral life of the masses. The workers may secure a greater or lesser degree of political liberty to fight for their economic emancipation, but no amount of liberty will rid them of poverty, unemployment, and oppression until the power of capital is overthrown. Religion is one of the forms of spiritual oppression which everywhere weighs down heavily upon the masses of the people, over burdened by their perpetual work for others, by want and isolation. Impotence of the exploited classes in their struggle against the exploiters just as inevitably gives rise to the belief in a better life after death as impotence of the savage in his battle with nature gives rise to belief in gods, devils, miracles, and the like. Those who toil and live in want all their lives are taught by religion to be submissive and patient while here on earth, and to take comfort in the hope of a heavenly reward. But those who live by the labour of others are taught by religion to practise charity while on earth, thus offering them a very cheap way of justifying their entire existence as exploiters and selling them at a moderate price tickets to well-being in heaven. Religion is opium for the people. Religion is a sort of spiritual booze, in which the slaves of capital drown their human image, their demand for a life more or less worthy of man.
But a slave who has become conscious of his slavery and has risen to struggle for his emancipation has already half ceased to be a slave. The modern class-conscious worker, reared by large-scale factory industry and enlightened by urban life, contemptuously casts aside religious prejudices, leaves heaven to the priests and bourgeois bigots, and tries to win a better life for himself here on earth. The proletariat of today takes the side of socialism, which enlists science in the battle against the fog of religion, and frees the workers from their belief in life after death by welding them together to fight in the present for a better life on earth.

On February 21, 1848, The Communist Manifesto emerged as a revolutionary blueprint, exposing capitalism’s contradictions and arming the working class with the theory of its own liberation. Marx and Engels revealed capitalism as a system doomed by its own crises, where wealth concentrates in the hands of the few while the many toil in exploitation.
Translated into over 200 languages, the Manifesto has inspired labor movements, revolutions, and resistance against oppression. Its message remains urgent: as capitalism spirals through crisis, the proletariat must unite to overthrow it. "The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win."

With the clarity and brilliance of genius, this work outlines a new world-conception, consistent materialism, which also embraces the realm of social life; dialectics, as the most comprehensive and profound doctrine of development; the theory of the class struggle and of the world-historic revolutionary role of the proletariat—the creator of a new, communist society.
