A year of genocide, by the numbers. The most destructive war of annihilation since World War II has left Gaza in ruins. The brutality is so extreme that even some of Israel’s allies are horrified and are distancing themselves in an unprecedented way. Every aspect of life in Gaza is under attack. Even if the airstrikes were to end tomorrow, the two million displaced people have no homes to return to. The land they once knew is gone. Here’s a summary of the devastation.

According to Engels, the bourgeois state does not “wither away”, but is “abolished” by the proletariat in the course of the revolution. What withers away after this revolution is the proletarian state or semi-state.

In Europe, reformism actually means abandoning Marxism and replacing it by bourgeois “social policy”. In Russia, the reformism of the liquidators means not only that, it means destroying the Marxist organisation and abandoning the democratic tasks of the working class, it means replacing them by a liberal-labour policy.

On October 7, 1879, Joel Emmanuel Hägglund—known to the world as Joe Hill—was born in Gävle, Sweden. A songwriter and labor activist, Hill became a martyr for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), a revolutionary union. His influence extended far beyond his short life, with his songs echoing on picket lines across the United States, which had become his new home. These songs not only motivated workers but also served as an essential tool for spreading the union’s message. At a time when many working-class people either could not or did not have access to left-wing publications, Hill’s lyrics became a vehicle for their education and empowerment.

One of his most famous songs, The Preacher and the Slave, critiques the religious establishment, which often sided with the capitalist class, promising spiritual rewards while ignoring the workers' immediate needs. In biting satire, Hill wrote:

"You will eat, bye and bye,
In that glorious land above the sky;
Work and pray, live on hay,
You'll get pie in the sky when you die."

This song gave birth to the now-common phrase “pie in the sky,” symbolizing empty promises made to pacify the oppressed. Hill’s songs captured the frustrations and aspirations of the working class, using humor and irony to highlight the hypocrisy of those in power.

Despite his efforts to fight for workers' rights, Hill was arrested and later executed by the state of Utah in 1915 for a murder he almost certainly did not commit. His trial and execution were highly politicized, with many believing that Hill’s real crime was his influence in organizing workers and challenging the status quo. His final words, written in a letter to fellow unionists, reflect his unbroken spirit: "Don't waste any time mourning. Organize!"

Joe Hill's legacy continues to inspire activists and workers around the world. His songs remain a powerful testament to the struggle for justice, with timeless messages that resonate even in today’s labor movements.

On this day, October 8, 1969, Black Panther Party activists in New Haven, Connecticut, launched the John Huggins Memorial Free Breakfast for Children Program, a vital initiative aimed at addressing the immediate needs of poor and working-class Black communities. The program was named in honor of John Huggins, a prominent Panther who had been tragically murdered earlier that year by members of a Black nationalist group manipulated by the FBI's covert COINTELPRO operation. COINTELPRO, short for Counter Intelligence Program, was a notorious campaign launched by the FBI to undermine and dismantle Black liberation movements, including the Black Panther Party.

The breakfast program was established at the Newhallville Teen Lounge on Shelton Avenue and operated daily from 7 AM to 8:30 AM, providing free, nutritious meals to children. The food and equipment used were generously donated by local businesses, reflecting community solidarity and support for the Panthers' efforts. The Black Panther Party not only provided food but also organized transportation to ensure that children could attend the breakfast and still arrive at school on time. They collaborated with Welfare Moms of New Haven, a grassroots group of mothers advocating for better living conditions and welfare policies, to increase the impact of their program.

The Free Breakfast for Children Program was one of several "survival programs" initiated by the Panthers. These programs were designed to meet the immediate needs of the Black community while also fostering a sense of collective empowerment and self-determination. Other survival programs included free medical clinics, legal aid, and educational programs. These efforts aimed to improve health, nutrition, and living conditions in poor Black neighborhoods while encouraging political consciousness and organizing for radical social change.

At its peak, the New Haven breakfast program fed between 70 and 80 children each day. Nationwide, the Black Panther Party's free breakfast programs fed tens of thousands of children. However, these initiatives were often met with violent repression by the state. Many Panthers were targeted, arrested, and, in some cases, assassinated as part of COINTELPRO's efforts to neutralize the growing influence of the Party. Despite the repression, the Free Breakfast for Children Program left a lasting legacy. Historians believe that the success of the Panthers' program pressured the U.S. government to expand its own breakfast programs, which had been limited in scope prior to the Panthers' efforts. In 1975, the National School Breakfast Program was permanently authorized by Congress, a move that many attribute in part to the pressure generated by the Black Panther Party's groundbreaking work.

The legacy of the Panthers' survival programs, particularly the Free Breakfast for Children, continues to inspire movements for community care and mutual aid, proving that grassroots organizing can lead to substantial changes, even in the face of intense state opposition.

At least 31 alleged Maoist guerrillas have been killed by Indian police and paramilitary forces. The clashes are just the latest in the state’s coordinated efforts to crush the movement aiming to bring about socialist revolution.

The attacks occurred in the Abujhmad forest in the eastern state of Chattisgarh, a stronghold of the Maoist movement and an area which contains rich deposits of natural resources like iron and bauxite.

Since 2004, the Communist Party of India (Maoist) has led the armed rebellion by Adivasi people preventing attempts by multinational mining companies and the government to displace them from their land.

🔴 Being like Che: Inspiration for the new generations
✍🏻 By Marlen Carrasco, Communist Party of Cuba

Today, the world faces complex challenges: social inequality, climate crisis, economic and political injustices that favor the few over the majority. In this context, courageous leadership, a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to justice are needed. This is where the legacy of Ernesto "Che" Guevara becomes relevant, as an historical figure and as a symbol of struggle and resistance.

We will be like Che is a phrase that inspires courage, ignites the revolutionary spirit and awakens consciousness.

The Heroic Guerrilla taught us that social transformation is not an utopia, but a possible reality if we are willing to fight for it. His life was marked by a deep sense of responsibility towards the oppressed and a firm conviction that freedom and dignity are universal rights. Acting in favor of a more just future also defines his legacy.

In these times, being like him means adopting his fighting spirit and his ability to mobilize the masses. It means understanding that each of us has a role to play in building a more equitable society.

Today, when it is more necessary to fight for our common causes, we should not fear sacrifice. Guevara also taught us that. The importance of education and critical awareness, to discern between good and bad actions, between truth and manipulation.

He left his indelible mark on the culture of Latin America and other places. He wrote several books, one of the most famous, Socialism and Man in Cuba, reflects his demand for a classless society.

Commander Guevara is an inspiration for the new generations. Let us honor his legacy by being brave and supportive. Being like Che is more than a phrase, it is an eternal commitment, an oath not to give up in the face of adversity. In our daily work, there is the possibility of writing our own history, one where the optimism and intrepidness of the man with the lone star prevails.
