In the US it was first made known through the establishment of Federal Boarding Schools for native children. Like it’s Canadian counterpart extensively exposed by Kevin Annette and the International Common Law Court of Justice in Brussels, the US system had much the same intentions: put native children in so-called schools where they were tortured and killed. The purpose being to decrease the native population so as to take control of their mineral rich lands.

By 1887 a federally funded system had been built to separate Native American children from their families, replace language with punishment, and convert identity into something “acceptable.” The Dawes Act broke communal tribal lands into individual allotments, declared the rest “surplus,” and transferred tens of millions of acres away from Native nations. Children who should have inherited and worked that land were removed, renamed, and trained for someone else’s economy. Remove the children. Sever the language. Sever the land connection. Then take the land. And the system left cemeteries behind.
