We honor today, June 6th, 78 years of Deliverance Day (D-Day) during World War II. Here are some facts about it:
- It was the largest seaborne invasion in history. More than 156,000 men landed in Normandy, France
- It was scheduled for June 5th but was delayed for 24 hours due to bad weather
- Hitler was asleep when Allied Forces landed. No one dared wake him so none of his Generals sent reinforcements without his permission.
- Civilian casualties on D-Day were estimated at 3,000 people
- 4% of the sand on Normandy beaches are still made up of metal particles from D-Day landings
- The German Air Force was outnumbered 30 to 1 on D-Day. They failed to shoot down a single Allied plane in air-to-air combat
- The Allies parachuted dummies over Normandy on D-day to distract Nazi gunners from the real paratroopers (Edited)
Note: 3 to 5 cents was the cost of a 20โpage newspaper in the United States on June 6, 1944.
