🇮🇱🇧🇷 Israel downgrades diplomatic relations with Brazil after stalemate over ambassador

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this Monday (25) that it has decided to downgrade relations with Brazil after Itamaraty failed to respond to the nomination of Gali Dagan to head the embassy in Brasília.

Dagan was nominated back in January, but his appointment depended on Brazil granting the agrément — the formal authorization required by the host country. Although Brazil did not officially reject the request, the lack of response has been interpreted in practice as a refusal.

Faced with the deadlock, Israel withdrew Dagan’s nomination and declared that no new candidate will be put forward. According to the Israeli government, bilateral relations will henceforth be conducted at a “lower level” diplomatically.

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) has reassigned the investigation into alleged fraud at the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). The move, ordered by STF President Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, followed a recommendation from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) to randomly select a new rapporteur. The case is now under the supervision of Minister André Mendonça.

The reassignment came after Attorney General Paulo Gonet advised that the case should no longer be handled by Minister Dias Toffoli. According to Gonet, there were no legal grounds to justify keeping the investigation with Toffoli. Consequently, the case files were sent to the STF presidency for redistribution.
