The attacker reportedly abused a vulnerability in the Secret-side smart contract for the Axelar-Secret IBC connection. The contract handles locking tokens on the source and minting equivalents on the destination.

Axelar’s core protocol, other IBC routes, Secret tokens, and broader network were unaffected.

The attacker targeted the PancakeSwap V2 pool and drained roughly 1.1M USDT by abusing a token mechanic issue involving burn/deflation features, causing the pool’s balance to become inconsistent.
