Haiti asks world for military help to curb chaos

Haiti has asked for foreign military support to curb its gang violence crisis which has paralysed the country.

The Haitian government authorised Prime Minister Ariel Henry to request armed help due to "the risk of a major humanitarian crisis".

The US meanwhile urged its citizens in Haiti to leave due to the insecurity.

A group of powerful gangs have blocked the country's main fuel terminal since September, crippling its basic supplies like water and food.

The US is considering request for a humanitarian corridor to restore fuel distribution within Haiti.

City of Philadelphia apologizes for pharmaceutical experiments conducted by the University of Pennsylvania at Holmesburg Prison during the 1950s to 1970s on illiterate black inmates.

These experiments intentionally exposed incarcerated inmates at the prison to various pharmaceuticals, viruses, fungus, asbestos, carcinogens & dioxin, a component of Agent Orange.

According to the release the majority of these inmates were illiterate Black men.

A statement issued by the dean of Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, says the experiments at Holmesburg Prison were led by the late Albert M. Kligman, MD, PhD, who was a long-standing faculty member in the school’s department of dermatology.

“Historical events such as these research projects can have a long legacy, & can lead to enduring mistrust & painful memories. Learning from our history can also inform current & future practices,” Jameson said in the school issued statement.

Los Angeles: 56 people across Southern California were arrested for their alleged involvement in a long-running mail-and-check fraud scheme that officials say bilked more than 700 victims out of nearly $5 million. 

State Attorney General Rob Bonta said 769 people were victimized in a scheme that affected people in California, Nevada and Arizona. He said a total of 88 defendants were being charged in the case, for a total of 330 felony counts.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva said deputies and other law enforcement fanned out across the region Thursday, serving 75 warrants.
"The ringleaders and suspects involved in this scheme are reported members of two notorious L.A. County criminal street gangs."

Villanueva said perpetrators would steal checks from the mail, then "wash" them, replacing the name of the recipient with a forged name, then deposit the checks and withdraw the cash.
