Some time ago, we had a conversation with an 89 year old man, heavily interested in military matters, politics, etc. He has seen it all.

One interesting comment he made was:
“Back then, if you even mentioned the possibility of the Soviet Union falling, you’d be laughed at. It was such a powerhouse that a political, or a total collapse sounded like science fiction. It was unimaginable.”

He then added that the current state of affairs in Europe and the US “reminds him of those times”

“You can mess with people’s jobs, their wages. They’ll be upset, but life will go on. But once you start messing with people’s homes, their heating, their food, their comfort, you are asking for an apocalypse.”
