[North Korea-linked crypto hacks caused $9.7B in losses across 12 cases since 2022]

Twelve major cryptocurrency hacks linked to or suspected of involving North Korean hacker groups from 2022 to 2026 caused about $9.74 billion in losses, BlockBeats reported.

Citing statements from TRM Labs and the FBI, the outlet said the Binance hack accounted for about $6.3 billion, or 65% of the total. Other major cases included Bybit at $1.5 billion, Ronin and Axie Infinity at $620 million, Bitget at $388 million, DMM Bitcoin at $308 million, and WazirX at $235 million.

The U.S. government identified the Binance, Bybit, and DMM Bitcoin hacks as the work of the North Korean hacker group TraderTraitor. Of the remaining nine cases, eight were classified as tied to the Lazarus group, while the Bitget incident has not been officially confirmed as North Korea-linked. The loss estimates were based on asset values at the time of each incident and include only key cases, meaning they do not represent North Korea’s full scale of crypto theft, according to BlockBeats.

[Ethereum Foundation launches blockchain guide site for public institutions]

The Ethereum Foundation has launched a website introducing how governments, international organizations and NGOs can use Ethereum as digital public infrastructure, according to its official blog.

The site includes an overview of Ethereum, real-world adoption cases and practical materials. The foundation said Ethereum, as a shared infrastructure not controlled by any single institution, can help public bodies maintain independence, verify records on their own and cooperate with one another.

As one example, the foundation pointed to Bhutan’s national digital identity system, in which individuals store digital credentials in their own wallets and selectively disclose only the necessary information, while service providers can verify the authenticity of those credentials without exposing personal data on-chain. It added that it also developed an Ethereum-based proof of concept that tested how aid groups could coordinate support efforts without sharing sensitive personal information with one another.

[South Korea watchdog chief orders full review of external links after hacking incidents]

Lee Chan-jin, governor of South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service, has ordered a full inspection of external access points across the financial sector, including the virtual asset industry, in response to recent hacking incidents in the sector, Digital Asset reported.

According to the report, the Financial Supervisory Service said on Nov. 3 that Lee reviewed each sector’s response status to the recent hacking incidents at an executive meeting and discussed ways to strengthen security. The watchdog said external access points connected to systems handling customer and financial company assets, where an attack could cause financial losses, should be checked first, and outside access should in principle be blocked until vulnerabilities are resolved. It also said security readiness needs to be stepped up further at virtual asset service providers and online investment-linked finance firms, where actual financial losses have occurred.

[Arbitrum security council recovers $30M from Binance hacker-linked addresses]

Arbitrum’s security council recovered 8,425 ETH and more than 74 million ARB from addresses linked to the Binance hacker without signatures from the attacker’s private key, CoinDesk reported.

The recovered crypto was worth about $30 million. Using its emergency upgrade authority, which requires approval from at least nine of its 12 members, the council temporarily changed the code of Inbox, a core contract, moved the funds to a separate address, and then restored the original code. The recovered assets can be moved again only through an Arbitrum DAO governance vote.

CoinDesk said the move had the clear purpose of recovering hacked funds, but it could also fuel debate over decentralization and user control of assets because it showed the Arbitrum community could forcibly move funds from specific addresses without a private-key signature.

CoinNess previously reported that Arbitrum’s security council had frozen about $30.5 million in cryptocurrency stolen in the Binance hack.

Binance said part of the $6.34 billion set aside to compensate users for hack-related losses would be covered by the SAFU fund, and it plans to restore the fund to around $1 billion. However, Binance’s existing policy of topping up the fund to $1 billion when its value falls below $800 million due to a decline in Bitcoin prices does not apply when the fund is used, as in this case.
