[Possible fund theft signs detected from Binance hot wallet]

Signs of a possible fund theft from a Binance hot wallet have been detected, according to the Tree News X account. More than 60 tokens were moved in large amounts from a Binance hot wallet to a specific address, which was previously known to have received funds through Tornado Cash. The transactions occurred about 16 minutes ago.

An estimated $2.77 billion was said to have flowed out across five blockchains, although it has not been confirmed whether the incident was a hack. On-chain analyst Spreek explained that it had not been confirmed whether the transfers were internal movements or a hack, but all funds in an address known as Binance’s 14th hot wallet were moved to a new anonymous address. Spreek added that the transaction that moved the funds originated from an address that had received cryptocurrency through the crypto mixing protocol Tornado Cash (TORN) and then proceeded to the final anonymous destination.

[Analyst warns possible Binance hot wallet hack via EIP-7702 wallet sweeping]

Odysseas (@odysseas_eth), founder of Phylax System, said on social media the possible Binance hack may involve abuse of EIP-7702 that can turn a wallet itself into a sweeper, calling the situation serious. Odysseas said 63 tokens, including 167,464 ETH and 1.615 billion USDT, were moved from one Binance-labeled wallet just three minutes and 24 seconds after a signed delegation was installed.

Odysseas explained EIP-7702 allows a standard externally owned account, or EOA, to execute delegated code, and this delegated state remains in place permanently. He said the code can later authorize asset transfers without any additional signature from the wallet owner. According to Odysseas, the delegated contract had an operator address hardcoded into it that was funded by Tornado Cash, and read-only tests showed execution by unrelated callers was rejected. He added the attack path may have been enabled by a compromised private key or a malicious authorization signature signed by the wallet owner, while the route through which those signatures were obtained remains unclear.

[Analyst links Binance hot wallet breach to suspected North Korean actors]

Yuga Labs blockchain vice president Quit said on X the Binance hot wallet breach was likely carried out by North Korean actors.

Quit reproduced the phrase "Relayer" and said the key unresolved question was why a relayer had been needed. If the attacker had stolen the private key to a Binance wallet, the assets could have been sent directly through an atomic bundle without going through a relayer, Quit said. Quit added it was therefore reasonable to conclude the attacker did not directly possess the private key and instead had obtained only EIP-7702 authorization signatures, possibly through phishing or similar means. Based on that, Quit said it was reasonable to suspect North Korean actors, including the DPRK and Lazarus. A relayer is an intermediary that gathers transactions on behalf of the signer and submits them to an onchain network while paying the gas fee, or network cost, itself.
