Speaking at a forum hosted by the CFTC’s innovation task force, Selig described the technology as being as tangible as the printing press, the steam engine and the internet. He also warned that if SI agents engage in malicious activity, it could be difficult to identify who is behind a trade. As a result, Selig said regulators need to think carefully about how to regulate wisely in the age of superintelligence, adding that the CFTC is well positioned because it has already faced similar issues in the crypto market.

[WEF, BCG say digital asset regulation is expanding beyond crypto]

Digital asset regulation is expanding beyond traditional cryptocurrencies into areas such as tokenization, according to a report from the World Economic Forum and Boston Consulting Group.

The report said digital assets are affecting money transfers, financial market functions and countries’ monetary sovereignty, and added that tokenization and digital money, including stablecoins and programmable payment instruments, could have a bigger impact than Bitcoin on how governments establish legal frameworks. It said cryptocurrencies such as BTC, ETH and SOL still dominate the market, with a combined market capitalization of about $3 trillion. While that remains substantial, the report said digital money and tokenization technology could have a greater long-term impact.

It also identified legal clarity, custody asset protection, financial crime prevention, monetary sovereignty, capital flows, sanctions compliance and financial system competitiveness as key policy tasks, while stressing that countries need to adjust existing regulations to keep pace with technological change.
