[U.S. spot BTC ETF Q3 holdings filings outpace prior quarter, top 50 firms still pending]

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETF third-quarter holdings filings are coming in faster than in the previous quarter, Alex Thorn, head of research at Galaxy Digital, said on X.

According to data Thorn shared, 773 institutional investors had filed third-quarter holdings disclosures with the U.S. SEC as of Oct. 27, local time, up about 12% from 690 at the same point in the second-quarter filing period. Reported holdings so far amount to about 23,300 BTC, equal to 7.6% of the roughly 307,300 BTC disclosed by the end of the second-quarter reporting period. At the same point in that quarter, filings had accounted for 9% of the final reported total.

Thorn said there are also early signs of rising spot BTC ETF holdings among long-term investors. Investment adviser SigFig Wealth Management disclosed spot BTC ETF holdings for the first time this quarter, with about $73 million in new client positions. He added, however, that the top 50 institutions by second-quarter holdings, including the top 20 that accounted for about 50% of total BTC-equivalent holdings in the period, have yet to file third-quarter disclosures.

Most large asset managers and investment advisers tend to file shortly before the Nov. 16 deadline, Thorn said, adding that about 97% of all filings are expected by that date.

[Spiral says weak demand, not technology, is holding back BTC payments]

Spiral, Block’s open-source Bitcoin development organization, said weak demand rather than technological limitations is the main factor holding back broader BTC payment adoption.

In a report published on GitHub, Spiral said payment technology such as the Lightning Network and BTC wallets has advanced significantly over the past seven years, but daily BTC usage remains limited. Holders tend to avoid spending BTC as they expect its price to rise, while merchants have little incentive to adopt BTC payments because consumer demand is low.

Spiral also said major payment companies such as Stripe and Shopify are adopting stablecoins instead of BTC, while payment protocols for AI agents are effectively being built on stablecoins. If those payment methods become established in the market, BTC could face greater difficulty entering later, Spiral said.

To boost BTC payment adoption, Spiral proposed supporting both BTC and dollar-denominated payments on the Lightning Network, targeting BTC payment demand in countries with unstable currencies, offering discounts and rewards for BTC payments, and developing new use cases such as micropayments based on AI service usage. Spiral also called on developers and payment companies to share additional ideas and relevant data.

[Solana pushes shift toward institutional finance-led growth]

Solana is moving beyond a meme coin-driven growth model and expanding into institutional finance, Bloomberg reported, citing a Galaxy Research report.

Meme coins' share of Solana trading volume fell sharply to 15% to 20% in the second quarter from more than 50% at the end of 2024, while Solana’s share of the on-chain perpetual futures market dropped to 6% from 17% over the same period, according to the report. SOL is down about 20% from the start of the year, and U.S.-listed spot and staking SOL ETFs posted total outflows of around $50 million over the past two weeks in October.

The Solana Foundation plans to broaden practical financial use cases such as stablecoins and tokenized assets to attract participation from Wall Street institutional investors. Bloomberg said a key question for Solana’s future growth is whether it can secure a stable base of assets, developers, and users amid a weak crypto market and the rise of rivals such as Hyperliquid.
