[South Korean lawmaker alleges Kim & Chang adviser pushed Vitoz tie-up in KOK probe]

South Korean Democratic Party lawmaker Lee Kang-il said during a parliamentary audit of the Financial Supervisory Service on Oct. 19 that a Kim & Chang adviser with a Financial Supervisory Service background had encouraged financial companies to sign MOUs with Vitoz, a company allegedly tied to figures in the KOK Coin, or KOK Token, multilevel fraud case, which Lee said caused losses of 2.5 trillion won to 570,000 victims at home and abroad, according to Edaily.

Citing multiple unnamed sources, Lee said companies seeking guidance on how to join Hana Bank’s stablecoin consortium were told by Hana Bank’s president to meet a specific law firm adviser, and those companies were then encouraged to pursue MOUs with Vitoz, Edaily reported. In response, Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin said he had received a brief report on matters related to Vitoz.

[Cathie Wood says Bitcoin demand can stay firm even with a stronger dollar]

Cathie Wood, CEO of Ark Invest, said in an interview with SamproTV on Oct. 19 that even if a stronger dollar weighs on Bitcoin prices, demand for the asset can remain resilient because Bitcoin represents a new asset class and has a very low correlation with gold.

Wood said she does not agree with explaining investment demand for Bitcoin and gold solely through concerns about a weaker dollar. While the U.S. dollar could remain strong if deregulation in the U.S. lifts returns on investment capital above those in other countries, Bitcoin has its own separate growth drivers, she said. Wood also cited institutional investors’ diversification demand as a key driver for Bitcoin, saying its distinct price behavior relative to other assets gives investors an incentive to add it to portfolios.

[South Korea handled 48 crypto unfair-trading cases after investor law took effect]

Park said crypto exchange incidents worth tens of billions of won have repeatedly occurred, but the Financial Supervisory Service should transparently disclose the scale of damage in each case, inspection findings and whether corrective steps were carried out, so users can assess whether the investor-protection supervisory framework is functioning properly.

[BTC holds above $82K despite surge in 'Black Monday' fears]

Crypto market fears of a sharp sell-off intensified ahead of Oct. 19, the 39th anniversary of the 1987 U.S. stock market crash, but Bitcoin still climbed, according to crypto analytics firm Santiment.

Santiment said social media mentions of "Black Monday" rose to 176 on Oct. 18, up from a daily average of under two over the previous 60 days. Despite the uneasy sentiment, BTC closed at around $82,000 on Oct. 18, up nearly 1% from yesterday. Mentions tied to a crash also increased to 105 that day, although they remained within the range seen over the past 90 days.

Santiment added that a similar rise in "Black Monday" mentions on Sept. 14 was followed by a roughly 3% drop in BTC the next day. Even so, the firm said price action this fall has been inconsistent, making it difficult to conclude social media negativity will translate into an actual decline.

[Bitcoin recovery remains fragile as spot demand, whale holdings weaken]

Signals pointing to a Bitcoin bottom remain in place, but it is too early to expect a sustained uptrend as spot demand has weakened again and holdings among the largest whale investors have declined, CryptoQuant contributor Xwin Research Japan said.

Xwin Research Japan said exchange-held BTC rose slightly to 2.68 million from about 2.67 million in early October. While that remains below January levels, the data suggests it is difficult to say the decline in exchange supply is still continuing. Spot demand has also shown an unstable pattern, with 30-day spot demand recently nearing zero before turning negative again, while demand in the perpetual futures market has been supporting overall demand.

The contributor added whale accumulation trends were mixed. Investors holding 100 to 1,000 BTC have maintained net accumulation over the past 60 days, but the scale remains below late-September levels. Net declines in holdings among whales with 1,000 to 10,000 BTC have gradually narrowed, but holdings among whales with more than 10,000 BTC continue to trend lower on a net basis. For a full-fledged recovery, spot demand needs to rise consistently and buying interest needs to emerge to absorb BTC flowing onto exchanges, according to the analysis.
