[CertiK says attacker exploited legacy MakerDAO auction flaw to steal 200 ETH]

A legacy auction management contract tied to MakerDAO, now SKY, was exposed in an attack that drained 200 ETH worth more than $500,000, CertiK said. The blockchain security firm identified the cause as missing access controls on the 0x8804d1de function in the contract’s implementation.

According to CertiK, the contract still held four unsettled 50 ETH transactions linked to the March 2020 “Black Thursday” liquidation event, when the assets were won with $0 bids. The attacker then moved the stolen funds to Tornado Cash in 10 ETH increments, CertiK said.

[Vitalik says multisig signers should rotate keys immediately after each action]

Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin said on X that for multisig wallets, an ideal safety rule is for each signer to change keys after every action.

Buterin added that advances in AI-driven mathematical research could quickly threaten existing cryptographic systems. He said that under the assumption ECDSA could weaken, but not to the point where an attacker could instantly crack a signature, each signer should rotate keys after every action. He added that the time between a signature becoming public and the relevant key no longer being active should be minimized.

If possible, multisig signatures should be collected off-chain, Buterin said. He also warned that rushing an upgrade in a misconfigured state could make it easier to lose funds, and said no action should be rushed.

[Former CFTC commissioner calls staff crypto ownership ban absurd]

A ban on cryptocurrency holdings by regulatory agency staff is an absurd and ridiculous rule, former U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission Commissioner Brian Quintenz said at Token2049 in Singapore on Oct. 8, local time. Quintenz said regulators cannot properly understand technology they are not allowed to use.

He added the U.S. SEC and CFTC could provide the industry with significant regulatory clarity even without legislation from Congress. Quintenz is currently a director at Nasdaq-listed SUI Group Holdings after leaving the CFTC.

[BTC buy wall at $79K-$83K may cushion sharper declines, analyst says]

Substantial buy orders have built up in the $79,000-$83,000 range on Binance’s spot BTC order book, and the thickness of that buy wall could help prevent a sharp further drop in Bitcoin’s price, on-chain analyst Murphy said.

Murphy said liquidity provided by market makers naturally tilts toward the buy side when prices fall, while traders also place orders at lower levels to wait for entries. When BTC fell to $83,000 on Binance’s spot market, the largest gap in order book depth favored bids by $80 million, Murphy said. Murphy added that the gap between buy-side and sell-side executed volume has been widening during the decline, indicating aggressive buying is increasing while aggressive selling is easing. That suggests traders have not yet turned pessimistic on the market and are instead showing stronger willingness to buy aggressively, according to Murphy.

[Crypto supply growth slows to 3.3%, a positive sign for prices: analyst]

Jamie Coutts, a crypto analyst at financial research firm Real Vision, said the ongoing slowdown in new cryptocurrency supply growth could support higher prices.

According to a chart Coutts shared on X, the ratio of new supply over the past 12 months to the circulating supply of existing cryptocurrencies fell to 3.3% at the end of September, the lowest level since records began this year, from 26.5% in December 2021. Coutts said the sharp slowdown in new supply growth has not yet been reflected in prices. He added that disinflation, or a slowdown in the pace of inflation, generally accompanies productivity gains and economic growth and tends to support asset prices. As an example, he pointed to the S&P 500, which moved sideways for two years after U.S. inflation peaked in 1980 before rising 13-fold, while noting the comparison is not exact but still worth watching.

[Canton developer CEO urges firmer blockchain adoption before 2028 U.S. election]

Yuval Rooz, CEO of Digital Asset, the developer of Canton (CC), argued institutional blockchain adoption should expand to a point where it would be difficult to reverse even if the U.S. regulatory stance shifts after the 2028 presidential election, Cointelegraph reported. Speaking at Token2049 in Singapore, Rooz said widespread service adoption, as seen with Uber and Airbnb, makes government regulation harder.

Separately, Binance co-CEO Richard Teng said he still hopes the Clarity Act will pass after it was stalled in a Senate procedural vote in September, adding the bill could help prevent regulatory backtracking and encourage institutional entry into the market. Franklin Templeton CEO Jenny Johnson, however, said the market should not rely solely on the bill, noting the U.S. SEC and CFTC are already reducing regulatory uncertainty.

[South Korea lawmakers urged to review voting-right curbs for crypto exchange owners]

South Korea’s National Assembly Research Service said limits on the voting rights of major shareholders in cryptocurrency exchanges could affect constitutional property rights and corporate freedom, and should be assessed by weighing the public interest gained through regulation against the private interests being restricted.

The body made the comment in materials on voting-right restrictions for major shareholders of crypto exchanges sent to Democratic Party lawmaker Park Min-kyu, according to Newsis. It also pointed to major jurisdictions including the EU and Singapore, noting they rely on fitness reviews for major shareholders and ex post supervision rather than uniform equity caps.

[Bitcoin may fall to $80K if it fails to reclaim $85K, ABM Crypto says]

Bitcoin fell below $84,000 in a short period, and increased high-leverage short positions, spot ETF outflows, long liquidations and transfers of BTC held by the U.S. government likely added to the downward pressure, according to ABM Crypto.

The outlet said four newly created addresses deposited a combined 1 million USDC into Hyperliquid and then opened a 40x leveraged short position worth 148.49 BTC, or $12.5 million. As BTC then plunged sharply, concerns were raised about possible prior knowledge, though no actual link was confirmed. Over the same period, addresses tied to the U.S. government moved 834 BTC, worth $71.56 million, and 40,285 BNB, worth $31.63 million. The BTC was deposited into Coinbase Prime, ABM Crypto said. The outlet added that if BTC fails to quickly recover the $85,000 support level, the correction could extend to below $80,000.

[IMF says tokenization could reshape finance, but growth hinges on regulatory framework]

Tokenization has the potential to lower transaction costs and improve efficiency in financial markets, but its actual growth will depend on regulatory clarity, sufficient liquidity and proper safeguards, the International Monetary Fund said.

In Chapter 3 of its October Global Financial Stability Report, the IMF said the future of tokenization depends less on the technology itself than on policies that support adequate market liquidity, trust and safeguards. Its analysis showed more than half of stock-token trades took place outside regular equity market hours, while around 80% were executed in sizes of less than one share, indicating demand for 24-hour trading and fractional investing. At the same time, the IMF said the tokenized market still lacks liquidity and is more volatile than traditional markets. It added that trading is fragmented across multiple platforms, creating price gaps, and warned that if the market grows further, fire sales and liquidity stress could spread across the broader financial system.
