1. Not specific (generic) responses:
❌:"I want to improve the world by helping others."
✅: "After volunteering at a local animal shelter, I realized how small actions, like organizing adoption events, can make a significant impact on the lives of animals and people in my community."
2. Wrong structure: If the essay asks about a challenge you have overcome,
❌: "Writing 90% about what the challenge was, but not providing how you overcame it, what emotions you felt"
✅: "Writing 1/3 of your essay on what challenge was, 1/3 on what emotions you felt, 1/3 on how you overcame it and how it affected you"
3. Not researching the program's goals:
❌: "This program will help me develop the necessary skills for my future studies"
✅: "The TechGirls program aligns with my passion for STEM by offering hands-on coding workshops and leadership training. I am especially excited about the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded girls and highly-qualified professors on projects at VirginaTech University"
4. Lack of authenticity: Don't try to write what the Admission Committee wants to hear!
❌: "I am an ideal candidate because I have experience and have no weaknesses, unlike others."
✅: "I used to struggle with public speaking, but through practice and joining my school's debate team, I learned to communicate effectively and confidently."
5. Cliche Statements:
❌: "I am excited about learning about new cultures and their traditions"
✅: "I am curious about how cultural traditions shape people’s perspectives. For example, I’d love to share how celebrating Nowruz teaches the values of renewal and gratitude. I would love to learn more about the differences between how Eid al-Adha is celebrated in Uzbekistan and Morocco"
6. Overly dramatic or emotional narrative:
❌: "My life has been an endless series of struggles and pain. Every day felt like a dark tunnel with no light at the end."
✅: "Growing up in a small town, I faced several challenges accessing resources to explore my interest in STEM. I felt pessimistic and depressed as I was not able to meet people with the same interests. However, these obstacles taught me to be resourceful—such as teaching myself programming through free online courses"
7. Generalizing the question: Avoid doing so by giving examples!!!
