Avoid These 10 Essay Mistakes for Exchange Programs
Share and Save!
1. Not specific (generic) responses:
β:"I want to improve the world by helping others."
β : "After volunteering at a local animal shelter, I realized how small actions, like organizing adoption events, can make a significant impact on the lives of animals and people in my community."
2. Wrong structure: If the essay asks about a challenge you have overcome,
β: "Writing 90% about what the challenge was, but not providing how you overcame it, what emotions you felt"
β : "Writing 1/3 of your essay on what challenge was, 1/3 on what emotions you felt, 1/3 on how you overcame it and how it affected you"
3. Not researching the program's goals:
β: "This program will help me develop the necessary skills for my future studies"
β : "The TechGirls program aligns with my passion for STEM by offering hands-on coding workshops and leadership training. I am especially excited about the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded girls and highly-qualified professors on projects at VirginaTech University"
4. Lack of authenticity: Don't try to write what the Admission Committee wants to hear!
β: "I am an ideal candidate because I have experience and have no weaknesses, unlike others."
β : "I used to struggle with public speaking, but through practice and joining my school's debate team, I learned to communicate effectively and confidently."
5. Cliche Statements:
β: "I am excited about learning about new cultures and their traditions"
β : "I am curious about how cultural traditions shape peopleβs perspectives. For example, Iβd love to share how celebrating Nowruz teaches the values of renewal and gratitude. I would love to learn more about the differences between how Eid al-Adha is celebrated in Uzbekistan and Morocco"
6. Overly dramatic or emotional narrative:
β: "My life has been an endless series of struggles and pain. Every day felt like a dark tunnel with no light at the end."
β : "Growing up in a small town, I faced several challenges accessing resources to explore my interest in STEM. I felt pessimistic and depressed as I was not able to meet people with the same interests. However, these obstacles taught me to be resourcefulβsuch as teaching myself programming through free online courses"
7. Generalizing the question: Avoid doing so by giving examples!!!
β: " My coding will improve"
β : "As I already have experience in HTML, CSS, and JS coding languages, I want to improve my skills to work on community projects like Health and Nutritionist apps or Teaching Tech websites. TechGirls is the perfect program to help me achieve these goals."
8. Mistakes in Grammar and Spelling
β: "Im", "u r"
β : "I am", "You are"
9. Not Starting Early
β: Do not procrastinate till the last minute because technical problems are bound to happen most of the time.
10. Project name without its description
β: "I took part in Ibrat Camp."
β : "I participated in Ibrat Camp, a program designed to enhance teenager's leadership and language skills through workshops. During the camp, I led a team consisting of 15 people where we focused on promoting eco-friendly practices such as picking up litter, making social media posts to raise awareness in Kashkadarya and Karshi regions by doing so and so activities."
overall tip: be more specific by giving examples of scenarios, skills, plans, and problems(depending on the context).
