On May 12, CoMaps is turning one year old and, to celebrate with our community, we'll hold a little virtual birthday party to which everyone is invited that day at 19:00 UTC!
We'll share a bit of how CoMaps as a community, project and app has been doing, but mostly want to give some space to get to know each other!
Find all the details here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/wiki/First-anniversary-celebrations

Release 2026.05.06 is out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS, and soon on Google Play and brings a big new feature:
From this version onward, updating the map files of CoMaps is no longer tied to updating the app. Which means we can bring you fresh OpenStreetMap based maps more often!

The good news is that this release brings ability to update maps independently from the app version, so future approval delays will matter much less.
E.g. this release initially came with the May 4 maps, but the newer May 10 maps were already made available a few days ago - just try out the new "Check updates" button in the map downloader screen!
A next fresh batch of maps is also coming in a few days. We are now striving to provide weekly updates!

An upcoming opinion poll announcement about the proposed "Modes" change! π
The proposed "Modes" change is big and consists of distinct map styles for different transport modes and a revamped user interface.
It is iOS only so far, but is supposed to make it to Android at some point too.
Main features and UI/UX changes:
- a transport mode (walking, cycling, driving, public transport) switcher is added
- switching the mode changes map style and default routing mode
- transport-specific map styles highlight relevant features and deprioritize irrelevant ones
- distinction between the styles is supposed to grow with time
- a big search bar/button
- zoom buttons are hidden by default, but can still be enabled
- the extra fixed Favorites button is removed and the customizable button is preconfigured to be Favourites instead of Information/About/Help
- this means it's not possible to have quick access via the bottom buttons to both Favorites and some other custom choice at the same time
- the customizable button can still be set to any option of your choice
- Favorites, Information/About/Help etc. can still be always accessed via the menu, if not set as the choice for the customizable button
- in the future favorites might be also accessible via the search page and then the customizable button will be back to be preconfigured to Information/About/Help
- the layers widget could be left permanently open for quick access
- 3D buildings toggle is added to the layers widget
Its available for testing in iOS π test build
https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/issues/4519
(and it had been in many previous test builds too)
We want to better understand balance of opinions on several usability points, so
in a few days we'll run a few polls (in Telegram and matrix):
- preferred UI approach to switch between transport modes
- importance of having both a dedicated Favorites button and a customizable button
- importance of a 3D buildings toggle in the layers widget
Please check the comments or https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/issues/4519 for screenshots and proposed poll texts - this is for people to have time to test, think, discuss and make their mind before the actual polling.
