🌏 With the UN Convention to Combat Desertification COP17 Mongolia now over, the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team is reflecting on our experience of two weeks of learning, exchange, and collaboration around dryland, rangeland, and grassland conservation and restoration.

Here are some of our key reflections:

🌱 Sharing our expertise while hearing from practitioners working in different contexts gave us new perspectives on the challenges and opportunities for restoration, confirming that learning goes both ways and that it's critical to embrace the experiences of local communities, including pastoralists. These exchanges also connected closely with our ongoing work, including the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) -supported ARID project, International Climate Initiative (IKI)-supported work on grasslands, and Global Environment Facility (GEF)-supported work on drought and drylands, where locally grounded approaches and practical learning are central to implementation.

🤝 The conversations and exchanges we had throughout COP17 reinforced the value of creating spaces where people from civil society to government can share experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen their work on the critical issues of desertification, land degradation, and drought.

🌍 COP17 was also a reminder of why multilateralism matters. Progress is not only about negotiated outcomes, but also about building shared understanding, relationships, and cooperation across countries, institutions, and communities. Sustaining these connections beyond the COP, alongside continued knowledge exchange and capacity development, will be essential for translating global commitments on land, drought, and restoration into action and ensuring that vulnerable landscapes and communities receive the support and resources they need.

We’re grateful to everyone who shared their knowledge and experiences with us and helped make COP17 such a meaningful space for learning and collaboration. Stay tuned for additional updates from the IUCN Forest and Grasslands Team as we dive into more stories and lessons from the ground.
