167 years ago today, astronomer Richard Carrington was making a chart of sunspots—like the one pictured here—when he observed a massive solar flare that preceded one of the most powerful geomagnetic storms on record. The storm has since been dubbed the #CarringtonEvent.

#Auroras lit skies far beyond their usual range, while electrical currents disrupted telegraph systems and even caused some equipment to spark and catch fire.

A solar storm of similar intensity today could pose serious risks to satellites, communications and power grids.

@NOAA satellites such as the GOES-R series and SOLAR-1 monitor the sun for these types of events and offer crucial early warnings that allow for preparation and the mitigation of impacts.
