This satellite was only supposed to last three years. It kept working for over a decade and permanently changed how we see Earth. 🛰️
Landsat 4 launched on July 16, 1982, carrying a new instrument called the Thematic Mapper (TM) alongside the Multispectral Scanner (MSS) that had been flying since 1972. TM delivered sharper, more detailed views of Earth's surface, and its 30-meter resolution became the standard every Landsat mission has maintained since. It's the foundation of the consistent record scientists use today to monitor forests, agriculture, cities, water resources, and environmental change.
Landsat 4 also became the first Landsat mission to use NASA's Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), enabling near-real-time communications from almost anywhere in orbit and reducing reliance on ground station visibility.
Despite technical challenges along the way, the satellite far outlived its design life, collecting more than a decade of valuable imagery and helping lay the foundation for the modern Landsat program.

📸 2: Acquired just nine days later, the first Landsat 4 image shows Detroit, Michigan, and Windsor, Ontario, separated by the Detroit River.
