🌄 Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) is the process of regaining ecological functionality and enhancing human wellbeing across deforested or degraded landscapes. It restores whole landscapes rather than isolated sites and balances ecological, social, and economic needs.
FLR is rooted in several key principles:
🟢Focus on landscapes, considering mosaics of land uses and governance systems.
🟢Maintain and enhance natural ecosystems, never converting intact or high-integrity ecosystems.
🟢Restore functionality, ensuring robust ecosystem services.
🟢Allow for multiple benefits, considering social, ecological, and economic dimensions.
🟢Tailor to local conditions, designing interventions that fit local contexts.
🟢Involve stakeholders, embracing diverse voices and participatory processes.
🟢Manage for long-term resilience through adaptive management.
🌀In regions like the Western Balkans, communities are facing increasingly severe climate change impacts, including rising temperatures, extreme weather events, floods, droughts, and forest fires. These climate challenges not only threaten biodiversity but also jeopardize the livelihoods, health, and wellbeing of local communities. FLR is a critical tool for confronting and overcoming these challenges, in the Western Balkans and beyond.

On October 12, 2025, remnants of former Typhoon Halong slammed into coastal Alaska, displacing more than 1,000 people and prompting one of the largest airlift evacuations in the state’s history. NOAA satellites were there every step of the way, collecting critical imagery and data.
