BIG: Iran, China, and Israeli firms ran first-of-their-kind AI influence campaigns using Chinese open-source models (including DeepSeek) to create autonomous "agents" that handled every stage — from opening fake social media accounts to coordinating messaging — with minimal human involvement.

The AI agents created networks of fake accounts across Instagram, Facebook, X, and TikTok, posting about politics and current events to sway opinions.

Iran's campaign was most concerning.

Agents posed as everyday Americans in major cities, tagged journalists and politicians, spread anti-Republican memes, and gained ~80,000 followers in H1 2026.

One Israeli campaign was run by IntelEye (founded by NSO Group alumni) using DeepSeek to control thousands of accounts posting both pro- and anti-Netanyahu content ahead of Israel's October elections. IntelEye claims it was "defensive research."

NEW: More U.S. service members have died during the Iran war than the Pentagon has publicly disclosed, according to six U.S. officials familiar with internal casualty data.

Five officials said at least 22 military fatalities have occurred since the conflict began on Feb. 28 — four more than listed in the Pentagon’s public casualty database. Another official said the number could be 23, while three U.S. contractors in the region have also died.

The Pentagon’s database currently lists 18 U.S. military deaths.

Officials said details of the additional fatalities, including identities and circumstances, remain unclear, while the Defense Department declined to comment on the discrepancy.
