Francis Fukuyama:

Someone like Zohran Mamdani, who was elected mayor of New York City, can only get elected in New York.

Itโ€™s a completely blue Democratic region, and it really has very limited appeal in the middle of the country, where all the swing voters are that really determine the outcome of a presidential election.

And thatโ€™s the big danger for Democrats.

Francis Fukuyama on Russia:

One thing about an authoritarian regime is it looks very strong until the moment it collapses.

So I wouldnโ€™t rule out, you know, some big changes happening on the Russian side.

Francis Fukuyama on Trump:

Trump has been pro-Soviet and then pro-Russian for decades. And itโ€™s a strange thing. Nobody really understands why that happened, but itโ€™s a consistent theme.

And I donโ€™t believe for a minute that heโ€™s become more sympathetic towards Ukraine.

Heโ€™s frustrated because he thought the Russians would actually defeat Ukraine, and heโ€™s unhappy that that hasnโ€™t forced them into a settlement. But heโ€™s not switched sides.

Israeli National Security Minister Ben-Gvir calls for a "historic solution" for Gaza:

Gaza terrorism is a problem that has accompanied the State of Israel since its establishment.

In the latest war, the State of Israel achieved significant successes against Gaza terrorism.

We must take advantage of this historic opportunity to bring about a historic solution.

I demand the implementation of the idea of encouraging emigration from Gaza.

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir:

From the beginning of the war, I have demanded the implementation of the idea of encouraging emigration from Gaza.

They told me that I was causing international damage, that it was forbidden to speak openly about emigration.

And then, one day, everything changed. President Trump openly declared the encouragement of emigration as a solution to the Gaza issue.

All at once, Ben-Gvirโ€™s plan became legitimate. Suddenly, everyone became Ben-Gvir.

Convicted war criminal Ratko Mladiฤ‡'s body was saluted by Serbian police and gendarmerie in Belgrade.

Young men lined overpasses with flares and banners โ€” "Welcome home, General," "Thank you, General."

The convoy took the body to the Military Medical Academy under full escort.

Tens of thousands are expected at this weekend's commemoration and Monday's funeral.

The EU's enlargement commissioner cancelled her visit to Serbia over it.

Russiaโ€™s Foreign Intelligence Service chief Naryshkin:

Western intelligence services have devised a new โ€œaxis of evilโ€ for themselves, consisting of Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea.

The risk of a large-scale conflict across the entire Eurasian region is quite real and is a cause for serious concern.

โ€œAny such facilities would become legitimate targets,โ€ Kremlin spokesman Peskov said.

The UK government is expected to approve the controversial Jackdaw gas field off the coast of Aberdeen in mid-September.

The project has faced legal challenges from environmental groups, who argue it was unlawfully approved because the government initially failed to fully assess the climate impact of burning the gas it would produce.

Jackdaw could account for up to 6% of UK gas output at peak production and begin supplying homes this winter.

U.S. diesel prices have hit a record $5.85 a gallon, as the Iran war disrupts global fuel supplies and sends oil prices higher.

The surge is driving up transportation costs and could soon push food and other consumer prices higher, with Brent crude now above $95 a barrel, up sharply from around $70 before the war.

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever on India:

Around the table of the European Council, we have finally started having the right debates. We are looking around the world, seeing who is like us โ€” who still believes in multilateralism.

Who can cooperate with us on the basis of respect, not force?

With whom in the world, with which large economy, can we develop that kind of relationship?

Well, if India is not on that list, then you have missed something very fundamental.

India is on that list. It is number one. You have countries like Japan and Korea as well, but India is the largest economy, the fastest-growing economy, a pool of talent, and there is still so much to be done.

Ukraine's presidential chief of staff Budanov told the NYT he advised Zelensky against any Donbas deal that lets Russia fly its flag over territory its army couldn't take.

US-mediated talks in Abu Dhabi in early 2026 narrowed a 20-point framework down to two sticking points:

The Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and the remaining Ukrainian-held slice of Donbas โ€” described as "four partly ruined midsize cities and a swath of farmland."

Ideas floated included handing administration to private military contractors, a US-backed "Board of Peace," or joint civilian governance.

Budanov says he's "ready for any step that will end the war" but won't accept formal territorial loss.

He expects talks may resume this month but no ceasefire before spring 2027.

Oman has quietly rejected Iran's push to jointly charge ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz, even on a voluntary basis.

This undercuts the IRGC's claim last week that the two countries had agreed on dividing the waterway's revenues.

Oman says charging ships to transit would violate international law and is pulling back under US and Gulf pressure.

Trump has twice threatened to bomb Oman if it enabled tolling.

Iran created a strait authority during the war and charged tankers $1โ€“2 million each, but without Oman's cooperation any post-war fee regime loses its legal cover.

Sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln were reportedly instructed not to speak to the media about deteriorating conditions on the ship as they arrived in Thailand after a record 286 days at sea.

Despite the restriction, sailors privately described the deployment, while Captain Dan Keeler acknowledged shortages of fresh food and basic supplies but rejected claims that conditions were as severe as reported.
